Landings of fishery products by craft of all sizes at Boston, Gloucester, New Bedford, and other Massachusetts ports reported currently during 1958 amounted to 516.4 million pounds valued at 37.2 million dollars. Compared with 1957, this was a decrease of 5 percent in volume but an increase of 9 percent in value. Of the total, 40 percent was caught by medium otter trawlers; 24 percent, by small otter trawlers, ; 22 percent, by large otter trawlers; 7 percent, by purse seines; 3 percent by scallop dredges; and the remaining 4 percent by eight other types of gear.

During 1961, fishing craft operating otter trawls caught 86 percent of the 432 million pounds of fish and shellfish landed at Boston, Gloucester, New Bedford, and other Massachusetts ports. Purse seines accounted for 6 percent of the total landings while scallop dredges took 5 percent. The remainder was taken on lines, in pound and trap nets, by harpoons, or with gill nets. Fishing grounds off New England yielded 359 million pounds or 83 percent of the entire landings. About 16 percent was taken on grounds off Nova Scotia, while the remaining 1 percent came from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Grand Banks, and from areas off the Middle Atlantic States.
