Book Description
Excerpt from Massachusetts in the American Revolution Honored by the invitation to address you upon the part borne by Massachusetts in the War of Independence, I deem it not inappropriate to preface my remarks by a rapid sketch of some of the conditions prevailing in all the colonies in the years immediately preceding the epoch of the American Revolution. If we look through that most interesting historical period - the last quarter of the eighteenth century - we shall find in America an abundance of intellectual activity. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the American Revolution Tee discovery of the western hemisphere, effected by the bold and persevering genius of Christopher Columbus, in the year 1492, gave a new impulse to European activity; and the splendid conquests of the Spaniards in the West Indies, and in South America, excited the emulation of the other maritime powers of Christendom. Our ancestors were not dilatory in their endeavors to enter upon this new path to glory and wealth; for we find that, in the year 1498, John Cabot, by virtue of a commission from Henry VIL, took formal possession, in the name of that mon arch, of a considerable portion of the conti nent of North America. No attempt, however, was made to estab lish a colony in that country till the reign of Queen Elizabeth, when Sir Humphrey Gil bert and Sir Walter Raleigh, in the years 1578 and 1584, formed settlements there. Book Description
Excerpt from The Financial History of Massachusetts: From the Organization of the Massachusetts Bay Company to the American Revolution The figure of Massachusetts is no unfamiliar one upon the stage of history. She has in fact occupied a prominent posi tion there on many important occasions; and if her audience have not always been able to express an unqualified approval of her choice of parts, they have at least not failed to be impressed with the wide range of her histrionic capabilities, or with the intensity with which she impersonates the char acter Of the hour. It is generally conceded that in the varied and trying roles of persecutor of the heretic and champion of the slave, of punisher of witchcraft at home and defier of op pression abroad, Massachusetts has had few equals and no superiors. But there is another role in which she made her début at an early day, for the adequate sustaining of which, though it is far less spectacular than any of those above men tioned, unremitting rehearsal and many public performances during a period of over two hundred and fifty years have scarcely sufl'iced to prepare this venerable histrionic dame. The performance of Massachusetts as public financier demands our attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Massachusetts Daughters of the American Revolution: December, 1891-December, 1905 The debts which we owe to the past, we must needs pay to the future. We live in the past by a knowledge of its history, and in the future by hope and anticipation. In view of these facts we will all agree as to the necessity of recording and preserving the anniversaries of our memo rable events, and setting up the milestones of our history. Senator Dolliver, in his address at the last Continental Congress, said that the D. A. R. In gathering up the frag ments of honor, and glory, and valor, and sacrifice, and pre serving with sacred vigilance the least name among those who were interested in laying the foundations of our national life, had caught the most beautiful idea that had ever entered into the history of this world. Mindful of the injunction to save the memorials of the past, that future generations might not forget, and that the history of the Massachusetts D. A. R. Might be put into tangi ble form for ready reference, early in 1905, a card was sent a; to each chapter in the state, asking for a brief history of the chapter, a condensed account of work done, and pictures of its patron saint or of any tablets or memorials placed. Most of the chapters responded to this appeal, and the result is most gratifying. All the reports have a thrill of life and show splendid progress, and we feel that each chapter in our state is a link in the chain which binds all the chapters of our country into one great harmonious whole.
