El reconocimiento del "sentimiento de exilio" en las estéticas activistas posmodernas que proponían un acercamiento entre el creador y el público permite entender la naturaleza irremediable de tal sentimiento. Aquella actitud del creador moderno que le permitía emitir sus reflexiones desde un "exilio interior", es decir, desde una distancia conscientemente construida, provocada por un extrañamiento respecto a un mundo percibido como ajeno, más allá de constituir la esencia de la misma modernidad, era una respuesta inevitable del yo que se enfrentaba, de forma inexorable, a un mundo que no le ofrecía otra posibilidad que la de reconocerse como un xenos, como un extranjero extraviado de la naturaleza. La "Operazione Difesa della Natura" de Joseph Beuys proponía una redefinición de la relación entre la cultura y la naturaleza, entre el hombre y el mundo, que permite entender la fisura que queda abierta. en el mismo contexto de la posmodernidad, y que actualiza la experiencia de aquel placer del displacer de lo sublime kantiano, íntimamente relacionado con la filosofía romántica y entendido por Lyotard como condición del mismo gesto posmoderno, y que ratifica, a través de su intrínseca dualidad, la intimidad del mismo sentimiento de exilio.
