Work and Play in Southern Indiana
Author: Daniel D. Scherschel

Category : Biography & Autobiography

Pages : 342
Book Description
WORK AND PLAY in southern Indiana" is the third in a series of my books. It is in the time of the 1970's and 1980's. In it is some things learned working construction and then at a foundry. Also are thoughts on three wheelers, rafting creeks and walking through train tunnels. My first book MAPLE GROVE, was of growing up on a dairy farm. My second book, MAPLE GROVE THE 60's, was of some things I learned during my teenage years. Wanting to save stories for my grandchildren, I bought a computer in 1990 and started compiling my hand written writings. I am just an average person with my average stories. People seem to enjoy relating to these average stories, remembering their version of life.

Book Description
This story in 2018 has an anniversary of fifty-eight years. I wrote this book for information and to tell our story. We are Native Americans, and we live in Dunn, which is located in Harnett County, North Carolina. This book is a true account of the struggle of two brave Indian brothers who wanted better education opportunities for their children. My dad often made this statement: "Parents want a better life for their children than what they have experienced." He often reminded me and my nine siblings, "Your money could be taken, your valuables stolen, but no one could take knowledge from you." After the eighth grade, there were no accommodations in Harnett County for Indian high school students. High school students attended the state run Eastern Carolina Institute for Indian Children. This involved a seventy-two-mile round-trip on a bus daily. We had to rely upon our Lord and Savior for our strength. Our journey would take six long years. It was our faith that made us strong for the challenge. When the mission was accomplished, six of the siblings received an education at Dunn High School.

The 60s Communes
Author: Timothy Miller
Publisher: Syracuse University Press
ISBN: 0815605501
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 360
Book Description
The greatest wave of communal living in American history crested in the tumultuous 1960s era including the early 1970s. To the fascination and amusement of more decorous citizens, hundreds of thousands of mostly young dreamers set out to build a new culture apart from the established society. Widely believed by the larger public to be sinks of drug-ridden sexual immorality, the communes both intrigued and repelled the American people. The intentional communities of the 1960s era were far more diverse than the stereotype of the hippie commune would suggest. A great many of them were religious in basis, stressing spiritual seeking and disciplined lifestyles. Others were founded on secular visions of a better society. Hundreds of them became so stable that they survive today. This book surveys the broad sweep of this great social yearning from the first portents of a new type of communitarianism in the early 1960s through the waning of the movement in the mid-1970s. Based on more than five hundred interviews conducted for the 60s Communes Project, among other sources, it preserves a colorful and vigorous episode in American history. The book includes an extensive directory of active and non-active communes, complete with dates of origin and dissolution.

Shining out and Shining In
Author: James R. Newby
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1491819197
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 153
Book Description
It is a privilege to share through the ministry of writing this remarkable life with others. The life of Tom Tipton begins as a child in segregated Washington, DC; travels through the powerful music world of jazz, gospel music, and the old hymns; reaches into politics and the struggles and hopes of desegregation; explores worldwide evangelism; and is still being lived out in 2013 in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. It would be a mistake to suppose that Tom Tiptons biography is just one more in the array of books that represent the cult of personal exposure. His is different in kind. His message is one of encouragement to the thousands of people who are now discouraged. His story belongs in one sense to the literature of witness, but in a far deeper sense, it belongs to the literature of hope. It is my hope that those who read these words will have their own lives enriched, in the same way that Tom Tipton has enriched so many lives through his ministry of music. He is an amazing man who has the gift of bringing out the best in others. Prepare for a spiritual experience.
