Book Description
Excerpt from Physiological Chemistry: A d104-Book and Manual for StudentsIn the third edition the practical part has been rearranged, largely rewritten, many new and important methods, much as those of blood analysis, have been added, and many revisions made in the text required by the development of knowledge since the second edition was published. This revision has been most extensive in the chapter on vitamines.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Physiological Chemistry MY colleague's book, in its earlier editions, received so hearty and so general a welcome that any personal words of recommendation seem now uncalled for. In this edition, however, it emerges as a work of a somewhat different order. Like all good books which deal with a progressive subject, it has felt the growth impulse, and, notwithstanding the exceptional nature of the times, material for growth has during the last few years accumulated in abundance. If this edition has largely out grown its predecessors the increase is not only desirable, but, in my Opinion, necessary. Progress in any science calls continuously for new methods, and for extension and improvement in technique. In the growth of any branch of knowledge there are, indeed, periods when the development of technique becomes the most pressing of needs, and its success the best measure of progress. Biochemistry has been successfully passing through such a period. Its methods have been greatly multiplied, extended and improved. We are now beginning to reap the reward in the accumulation of accurate quantitative data. One need peculiar to biochemistry, that of following changes in living tissues without terminating the life of the animal, or harming the human subject, has now been largely met, at least so far as studies of the blood are concerned. This is due to the success of micro-methods of analysis. 80 significant are some of the results which can be obtained that we may hope to see the methods become as general in connexion with medical diagnosis as the use of the stethoscope or the electrocardiogram. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Physiological Chemistry: A Book Designed for Use in Courses in Practical Physiological Chemistry in Schools of Medicine and of Science The plan followed in the presentation of the subject of this volume is rather different, so far as the author is aware, from that set forth in any similar volume. This plan, however, he feels to be a logical one and has followed it with satisfactory results during a period of three years in his own classes at the University of Penn sylvania. The main point in which the plan of the author differs from those previously proposed is in the treatment of the food stuffs and their digestion. In Chapter IV the Decomposition Products of Proteids has been treated although it is impracticable to include the study of this topic in the ordinary course in practical physiological chemistry. For the specimens of the decomposition products, the crystalline forms of which are reproduced by original drawings or by micro photographs, the author is indebted to Dr. Thomas B. Osborne, of New Haven, Conn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physiological Chemistry IN view of the results attained from the course given in physiological chemistry in this University, as well as the experience of others, the author is firmly convinced of the superiority of the laboratory method of instruction over the didactic, believing that it is only by practical work that the student can become familiar with the physio logical changes in progress in the animal body and their products. This book has been prepared with the aim of imparting accurate knowledge through the student's own observation. It has seemed advisable to include with the directions for experimental work a brief explanation of the facts observed, so as to call attention to their meaning; or, at times, to state others which are important, but which could not well be demonstrated in such a course as this. Some acquaintance with general chemistry and with chemical manipulation is presupposed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
