En este Capítulo se describen los procedimientos, métodos y técnicas aplicables para la clasificación de depósitos de suelo. Se hace una descripción detallada que permitirá al lector el empleo de técnicas bien conocidas con las cuales se identifican y clasifican suelos gruesos y finos, a partir de la inspección visual y al tacto. Se discuten las consideraciones básicas que deberán tomarse en cuenta para elaborar un programa de exploración y muestreo de suelos y los aspectos que deben considerarse para supervisar su correcta ejecución. Se definen las técnicas de perforación aplicables a distintos tipos de suelo y condiciones y técnicas de exploración con métodos directos e indirectos.Se incluyen, además, procedimientos de muestreo aplicables en depósitos de suelos de diferente tipo. Se presentan varias técnicas y herramientas para la obtención de muestras alteradas. Se detallan los métodos manuales y se describen los muestreadores comúnmente empleados para tal fin, incluyendo los que se hincan a presión, los muestreadores de tubo abierto, los de pistón, los de tubo partido y los vibratorios. En el muestreo inalterado se detalla los pasos para la obtención de muestras cúbicas en pozos a cielo abierto. También se señala la aplicabilidad de diferentes muestreadores en suelos blandos y rígidos. En especial se mencionan los de tubo abierto (tipo Shelby), los de pistón, los de tubo rotatorio dentado, los de doble barril (Denison y Pitcher) y el de broca helicoidal. También se dan recomendaciones y técnicas para el buen manejo, preservación y transporte de muestras. Se trata a clasificación de depósitos de suelos con problemas especiales haciendo referencia a la manera de identificarlos tomando en cuenta su especificidad. En especial, se describen los ensayes y pruebas de campo y laboratorio para caracterizar suelos licuables, expansivos, dispersivos y colapsables. Asimismo, se describen y discuten los problemas asociados en cada uno de estos casos.
