Book Description
Excerpt from Manchester Streets and Manchester Men IN the present volume the work carried out in the previous ones is continued on the same lines as before. Long Millgate is so full of interesting spots that one is tempted to linger over them, and to say more about them. The Chetham Hospital, the Grammar School, and the Poets' Corner provide ample materials for the writing of a goodly volume on each. In an undertaking such as the present that is quite out of the question, and one is compelled to exclude many things that one would like to have said. The same remark is applicable to Manchester's ancient racecourse, and Strangeways' Park and Hall. At the same time enough has been written to give the reader some idea of the history of the institutions mentioned. I had hoped to include Withy Grove and Shudehill in the list of streets dealt with in the present volume, but found it to be quite impracticable. Book Description
Excerpt from Manchester Streets and Manchester Men: Second Series The present volume is a continuance of the articles 'on Manchester Streets that appeared in the columns of the Manchester E waning N ews. They embody the history of some of the best known streets in the city, and a perusal of them will enable the reader to realize the tremendous changes that have marked the city's pro gress during the last century and a half. The series of volumes, of which this is the second, aims at placing on record the story of those changes, in order that not only may the citizens of the present generation have in a convenient form such a record, but that it may be of use to members of succeeding generations who may wish to know somewhat of the marvellous evolution that marked the city's history during the latter half of the eighteenth and the whole of the nineteenth century. Book Description
Excerpt from The Manchester Man, Vol. 1 of 3 When Pliny lost his life, and Herculaneum was buried, Manchester was born. Whilst lava and ashes blotted from sight and memory fair and luxurious Roman cities close to the capital, the Roman soldiery of Titus, under their general Agricola, laid the foundations of a distant city which now competes with the great cities of the world. Book Description
Excerpt from Memorials of Manchester Streets It has been observed by the favourite author of Our Village, that she valued much less any reputation she might gain as a writer of romance, than the credit to be derived from the less ambitious, but more useful, office of faithfully uniting and preserving those fragments of tradi tion, experience, and biography which give to history its living interest. To this article of Miss Mitford's literary creed the writer of Memorials of Manchester Streets is disposed to subscribe. The series of chapters here presented was commenced in the Manchester Guardian six years ago, and has been continued at convenient intervals to a recent date. In its collective form, the book has undergone careful revision, extension, and re-arrangement, in order that itmay be found reliable for reference and interesting to peruse. In furtherance of the same endeavour, numerous illustrations, original or rare, have been introduced. In these illustrations the writer feels a certain amount of confidence which the letterpress alone might fail to engender. Their interest will take a wider range. In addition to the connoisseurs who will prize them for their antiquity, and increase the number in compliment to the old town, many unlearned yet inquiring spirits will read the pictures with pleasure, though unable to peruse the author's portion of the volume. Even in this lettered age, not all are lettered; and with the untaught the eye must be purveyor-in-ordinary to the intellect. Hence the value of characteristic engravings, which, telling their own inter esting story, require no formal teacher. Book Description
Excerpt from The Manchester Man In 1799 that line was almost unbroken, from the College (where it commenced at Hunt's Bank Bridge) to Red Bank. The little alley by the Town Mill, called Mill-brow, which led down to the wooden Mill Bridge, was little more of a gap than those narrow entries or passages which pierced the walls like slits here and there, and offered dark and perilous passage to courts and alleys, trending in steep incline to the very bed of the Irk. The houses themselves had been good originally, and were thus cramped together for defence in perilous times, when experience taught that a narrow gorge was easier held against warlike odds than an open roadway.
