Book Description
Excerpt from Retail Store Management Problems Since, in preparing men for executive positions in business, it is necessary to train them to think as an executive must think, the problems are presented as they came to the executives of stores. They are actual executive problems as we have been able to find them, with a few facts changed to cover up the identity of the particular store. Incidentally they are problems which the retailers are most interested in solving. From the experience of the members of the staff of the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, the advantages of the case method of teaching are unquestionable. The course in Retail Store Management has been developed from a lecture system to a discussion basis and from there to a straight case system. The necessary detailed background and the general principles of retailing are more thoroughly covered by present ing them in the body of the cases than by the lecture or text-book method. Class interest is more easily maintained when the members of the class visualize the problem as their problem and have the opportunity of discussing what should be done under particular circumstances, rather than when the instructor alone expresses his views. There is usually more than one way to solve a business problem and a proper discussion should determine a satisfactory conclusion. Book Description
Excerpt from Expenses in Operating Retail Grocery Stores What does it cost to Operate a retail grocery store How often should the stock be turned What are the average sales per salesperson? In order to answer such questions as these and to learn the best practice in store management, the Bureau is collecting exact figures and other specific information from retail grocers. A preliminary summary of the figures which have been obtained up to the present time is presented in this bulletin. The Bureau of Business Research, it may be explained for the benefit of those who are not already familiar with its work, was established in 1911 hy'the Graduate School of Business Administration of Harvard University as an agency for the scientific study of business methods and problems. Because of the need for scientific research in marketing, the Bureau began with that subject. The retail shoe trade was first investi gated, and in June, 1914, a Similar study of the retail grocery trade was begun. The Shoe research is now being extended to the marketing of Shoes by wholesalers and manufacturers. Later other branches of whole sale and retail trade will be studied. The grocery research is thus part of a comprehensive study of the subject of marketing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
