The practical take-up of Knowledge Based Systems (KBSs) is usually described as disappointing. One explanation of the reluctance of organisations to make a real commitment to these systems stems from the lack of well-defined techniques to engineer them in an acceptable manner. Without the assurance of quality that can be given by the use of a proven methodology, the risk of investing substantially in these systems will remain a risk too great to be taken. One of the chief manifestations of the lack of these techniques is that it is impossible to say with any assurance that it will be possible to maintain the systems so that their useful life can be extended. This book is concerned with the maintenance of KBSs, providing a balance between the academic and the practical, and containing analysis of tools developed in a research project. The intention of the book is to move from very general concerns available to all systems through to specific techniques and tools designed to address particular problems in particular representations, before concluding with some more general remarks. This book is essential reading for anyone, whether in a commercial or academic environment who wishes to build a serious Knowledge Based System that will continue to be used over a period of time. * SPECIAL FEATURES: * Building a Knowledge Based System is not the end of the story: the system must be used, and during its period of use, theknoledge on which it relies will change and develop. If one were forced to use a single key word to describe the decade of the 1980's, a very prominent one would be "technology. " Leading the forefront of tech nology advancement were breakthroughs in electronics. Devices that were uncommon or unknown in 1980 became commonplace, and almost indispens able, by 1989. Current experimental systems in industry, government, and the military take advantage of knowledge-based processing. For example, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) are supporting the develop ment of information systems that contain diverse, vast, and growing repositories of data (e.g., vast databases storing geographic informa tion). These systems require powerful reasoning capabilities and pro cessing such as data processing, communications, and multidisciplinary of such systems will scientific analysis. The number and importance grow significantly in the near future. Many of these systems are severely limited by current knowledge base and database systems technology. Currently, knowledge-based system technology lacks the means to provide efficient and robust knowledge bases, while database system technology lacks knowledge representation and reasoning capabilities. The time has come to face the complex research problems that must be solved before we can design and implement real, large scale software systems that depend on knowledge-based processing. To date there has been little research directed at integrating knowledge base and database technologies. It is now imperative that such coordinated research be initiated and that it respond to the urgent need for a tech nology that will enable operational large-scale knowledge-based system applications.
