Book Description
Earth's oceans cover almost three-fourths of the planet's surface. They sustain an array of life, provide food, affect climate, and provide for recreation, exploration, and trade. However, their beauty and power is compromised every day by human interference. In Maintaining Earth's Oceans, explore the constraints placed upon the great seas and the measures being taken to protect them. Book jacket.

Book Description
The ocean is an integral component of the Earth's climate system. It covers about 70% of the Earth's surface and acts as its primary reservoir of heat and carbon, absorbing over 90% of the surplus heat and about 30% of the carbon dioxide associated with human activities, and receiving close to 100% of fresh water lost from land ice. With the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, notably carbon dioxide from fossil fuel combustion, the Earth's climate is now changing more rapidly than at any time since the advent of human societies. Society will increasingly face complex decisions about how to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change such as droughts, sea-level rise, ocean acidification, species loss, changes to growing seasons, and stronger and possibly more frequent storms. Observations play a foundational role in documenting the state and variability of components of the climate system and facilitating climate prediction and scenario development. Regular and consistent collection of ocean observations over decades to centuries would monitor the Earth's main reservoirs of heat, carbon dioxide, and water and provides a critical record of long-term change and variability over multiple time scales. Sustained high-quality observations are also needed to test and improve climate models, which provide insights into the future climate system. Sustaining Ocean Observations to Understand Future Changes in Earth's Climate considers processes for identifying priority ocean observations that will improve understanding of the Earth's climate processes, and the challenges associated with sustaining these observations over long timeframes.

Book Description
The oceans contain 97% of the Earth's water, cover 71% of its surface, and hold 50-80% of all life on the planet. Our resource explores the importance of conserving this vast area. Design a board game that illustrates the effects of climate change on Earth's oceans. See how the water cycle explains why most of Earth's salt water is found in the oceans. Find out how climate change will affect ocean currents, resulting in a dramatic change to the farming and fishing industries. Explain how an increase in human population can cause some salt lakes to shrink. Conduct a case study on a container ship that lost several containers in a storm in the north Pacific Ocean. Make your own salt water to represent Earth's oceans and experience what it would be like to visit them. Get tips on what we can do to help protect ocean water. Written to Bloom's Taxonomy and STEAM initiatives, additional hands-on activities, graphic organizers, crossword, word search, comprehension quiz and answer key are also included.

Book Description
Climate Change: Evidence and Causes is a jointly produced publication of The US National Academy of Sciences and The Royal Society. Written by a UK-US team of leading climate scientists and reviewed by climate scientists and others, the publication is intended as a brief, readable reference document for decision makers, policy makers, educators, and other individuals seeking authoritative information on the some of the questions that continue to be asked. Climate Change makes clear what is well-established and where understanding is still developing. It echoes and builds upon the long history of climate-related work from both national academies, as well as on the newest climate-change assessment from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It touches on current areas of active debate and ongoing research, such as the link between ocean heat content and the rate of warming.

Book Description
Water is one of the essential components necessary for life to exist on Earth. All of Earth's water in all its states, frozen, liquid, and gaseous, make up the hydrosphere. Liquid water exists on the surface of the earth but there are also reservoirs of water underground. Frozen water exists as glaciers, ice caps, and icebergs. This water makes up a special subcategory of the hydrosphere called the cryosphere. Water can even be found in the atmosphere in the form of water vapor. Readers will come to understand how the water cycle tracks water's movement from one phase to the next.

Book Description
Soil contamination . . . public lands . . . surface and groundwater pollution . . . coastal erosion . . . global warming. Have we reached the limits of this planet's ability to provide for us? If so, what can we do about it?These vital questions are addressed in The Earth Around Us, a unique collection of thirty-one essays by a diverse array of today's foremost scientist-writers. Sharing an ability to communicate science in a clear and engaging fashion, the contributors explore Earth's history and processes--especially in relation to today's environmental issues--and show how we, as members of a global community, can help maintain a livable planet. The narratives in this collection are organized into seven parts that describe: Earth's time and history and the place of people on it Views of nature and the ethics behind our conduct on Earth Resources for the twenty-first century, such as public lands, healthy forests and soils, clean ground and surface waters, and fluctuating coastlines Ill-informed local manipulations of landscapes across the United States Innovative solutions to environmental problems that arise from knowledge of the interactions between living things and the Earth's air, water, and soil Natural and human-induced global scale perturbations to the earth system Our responsibility to people and all other organisms that live on Earth. Never before has such a widely experienced group of prominent earth scientists been brought together to help readers understand how earth's environment works. Driven by the belief that earth science is, and should be, an integral part of everyday life, The Earth Around Us empowers all of us to play a more educated and active part in the search for a sustainable future for our planet and its inhabitants.
