The Symposium on Magnetic Ultrathin Films, Multilayers and Surfaces, hosted by the European Materials Research Society, was held at the Palais de la Musique et des Congré in Strasbourg, France on June 4-7, 1996. Its central theme was the relationship of magnetic properties and device performance to structure at the nano and micrometer length scale. Research on the magnetism of surfaces, ultrathin films and multilayers has increased dramatically during recent years. This development was triggered by the discovery of coupling between ferromagnetic layers across nonmagnetic spacer layers and of the giant magnetoresistance effect in systems of reduced dimension using various micro and nanofabrication techniques has become a subject of special interest. It is certainly the promising application potential of these effects in new magnetic recording device geometries which causes this intensive research, which is done both by companies and at universities and research institutes. A selection of invited and contributed papers presented at the Symposium and accepted for publication is contained in this volume. The contents of these proceedings are organized into seven sections. Stuart Wolf This book originated as a series of lectures that were given as part of a Summer School on Spintronics in the end of August, 1998 at Lake Tahoe, Nevada. It has taken some time to get these lectures in a form suitable for this book and so the process has been an iterative one to provide current information on the topics that are covered. There are some topics that have developed in the intervening years and we have tried to at least alert the readers to them in the Introduction where a rather complete set of references is provided to the current state of the art. The field of magnetism, once thought to be dead or dying, has seen a remarkable rebirth in the last decade and promises to get even more important as we enter the new millennium. This rebirth is due to some very new insight into how the spin degree of freedom of both electrons and nucleons can play a role in a new type of electronics that utilizes the spin in addition to or in place of the charge. The work in the past year has primarily involved four areas of magnetic thin films: amorphous rare earth-transition metal alloys, epitaxial CoPt3 and Ni-Pt alloy thin films, amorphous rare earth doped Si (a new class of dilute magnetic semiconductor with large negative magnetoresistance which the authors have discovered), and exchange-coupled antiferromagnetic insulators. In the amorphous alloys, they made a systematic study of the effects of local anisotropy, macroscopic (up tack) anisotropy, and exchange constant on the fundamental (and practical) properties of these magnetic alloys, as originally described in the grant proposal. The work on the epitaxial Co-Pt (and more recently Ni-Pt) alloys was originally undertaken as a comparison study to the amorphous alloys. Crystalline Co-Pt alloys have many striking similarities to the amorphous rare earth-transition metal alloys: perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, magneto-optic activity, and a {Tc} (for CoPt3) somewhat above room temperature. They have discovered that these alloys exhibit a remarkable new phenomena; a surface-induced miscibility gap in a material which is believed to be completely miscible in the bulk. The authors are currently in several collaborations to measure specific heat of magnetic thin films. They used the specific heat to study antiferromagnetic superlattices, specifically NiO, CoO and MgO in various combinations to allow separation of effects of finite layer thickness and exchange coupling on the magnetic ordering.
