The need for additional guidance on building on clay soils was established by the concern at the high incidence of subsidence damage during the drought of 1975-76. This Digest, which supplements Digests 63, 64 and 67 Soils and foundations, is based on the findings of continuing BRE research into the performance of low-rise buildings founded on shrinkable clay soils.
