Book Description
Local government in the UK is in crisis. It is now neither local in terms of the geography and populations of its principle units, nor does it truly govern in these areas. As this book reveals, over the previous 200 years local government has moved from a system in which local interests held governance over localities to one in which central government and national and multi-national agencies such as corporate businesses hold governance over local and community decision-making. These changes seriously undermine the important role that local government can play in liberal democracy in the UK. The book explains the nature of local government today and asks if there is any possibility of change.

Book Description
Today many African states are formal democracies (in the sense of having governments that are the result of formal elections) but they are not liberal democracies (in the sense of protecting civil liberties and permitting an unhindered alteration of power). They are rather what Fareed Zakaria has termed illiberal democracies. This study explores the impediments to the development of liberal democracy in one such case: Zambia. Following a review of Zambia's pre-independence history and the failure of post-independence decentralization efforts, the study reviews Zambia's recent government reform measures, such as the 1993 Public Service Reform Programme and the 2004 National Decentralisation Policy. Local government policies and finances are also considered in a comparative historical context. The study argues that decentralization is pursued by governments as a mandate of structural reform from international organizations, without adequate attention to the flow of resources to local governments. While indigenous variables are considered the study concludes that the politics of strengthening Zambia's local governments extend well beyond Zambia's borders.

Book Description
This book is an explanation of the long-standing interrelationship between local government and political parties. It examines and outlines the differences between the political party outside the council and the political party group of councillors within the council. It explores the impact that the party groups have on the conduct of council business, decision-making and policy development and the impact they have on local representation. It addresses two questions that are fundamental to local representative democracy--who or what is it that the councillor represents, and are councillors elected to govern or to serve.

Book Description
In this age of a globalism, understanding the governments and politics of other countries is important in understanding the world around us. In Comparing Liberal Democracies, author Arthur B. Gunlicks contributes to this understanding in a discussion of the institutional structures and backgrounds of four liberal or Western democracies: the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the most state-like international organization, the European Union. Gunlicks provides a systematic and thematic (rather than country-by-country) approach that promotes comparisons of similarities and differences based on variables and concepts familiar to American and European students and the attentive publics in Europe and North America. After laying out a historical background, he explores liberal democratic, semi-democratic, and non-democratic states; territorial organization; presidential versus parliamentary political systems; separation of powers and checks and balances in these different political systems; electoral systems; legal systems; and the liberal democratic welfare state. A comprehensive core text, Comparing Liberal Democracies provides the background and concepts necessary for a better understanding of liberal democracies in general and of the American and major European democracies in particular.

Book Description
In this book Ines Newman raises new questions about the fundamental principles that should guide local government decision making in an era when austerity measures leave local governments struggling to meet the demands for services. Drawing on a lifetime of experience as a practitioner and academic within local government, she shifts the agenda toward a more ethical view of how local governments can enact policies that improve social justice and local democracy. Newman argues that local governments should provide a voice for those who lack power, and she does so through an energizing call to reengage politics with ethics and an examination of how local governments can develop active citizens, make a difference in the well-being of the disadvantaged, and, in the end, promote real democracy.

Book Description
Local governance has become a subject of particular interest, even in the context of globalization. As a bottom-up strategy, it aims is to increase the opportunities for civil society to engage in affairs of their own. As a top-down strategy, it wants to mobilize all endogenous potential available to improve political steering capacity. This book examines the theoretical approaches towards citizens' participation and provides case studies that indicate a varied menu of contemporary local democracies, urban and regional governance in Europe (Germany, Sweden, and Italy), Asia (Korea and Taiwan) and the US.
