Book Description
“This book from Liz Shaw-Stabler brings passion, guidance, and hope to the struggle of people suffering from chronic illnesses. Liz has spent decades battling systemic lupus, even enduring kidney failure and the challenges of living each day after day when she feels ill and then the near-miracle of kidney transplant—and all of the effects on the living of life. Liz is greatly admired by all who know her—a fighter, dedicated not only to personally overcoming illness, but also to bringing health care to people of color—a group that SLE strikes particularly hard. Shaw-Stabler is a professional educator and a passionate advocate, devoting hundreds of hours to founding LupusCare, which provides education and group meetings for a community in Los Angeles that is rich in African American and Latino families—a community that needs much better access to health care and health education. This book is another step in the battle. Read it to understand, to learn, and to discover how one person can influence the battle for personal and public health. Finally, read it to be inspired and to be moved to action. This book and its author are national treasures”—Bevra H Hahn, MD Professor of Medicine Chief of Rheumatology, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Great Admirer of Liz Stabler-Shaw Los Angeles, California, June 2010. “Lupus is a life-altering experience and wisdom provided our teachers and mentors can be enabling and empowering. Liz Shaw-Stabler has helped hundreds of women with her reassuring advice”—Daniel J. Wallace, MD, FACP, FACR Chief of Rheumatology at Cedares-Sinai Medical Center Liz Shaw-Stabler was born in East Texas and received her undergraduate degree from Prairie View A and M University. She moved to Chicago, Illinois, and began her career immediately after graduation. After living in Chicago for a few years, teaching high school, acquiring a Master’s Degree and doing freelance modeling, she slowed down long enough to get married. She is the mother of one daughter who resides in Chicago. Liz now lives with her husband, Jay, in Inglewood, California, where she became the Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Lupus Care Incorporated and organization that advocates for under-served lupus patients. Liz is a thirty-year lupus patient and has suffered many life-threatening illnesses but continued to believe that she was created to do something much bigger than her illness.

Book Description
Welcome to my book, 'How I Tamed the Wolf'. Wondering where the title came from? Here is the answer. 'Lupus' is the Latin word for 'Wolf'. In this book, I talk about my journey to being diagnosed with Lupus, along with my other conditions, my experiences and lessons learnt along the way, and how I went about taming the wolf and as a result, regaining some of my quality of life back again. I love to write. I love writing that much, I committed myself to writing weekly blogs about my life living with Lupus. Check out my website, livingwiththewolf.co.uk, to read them. I love sharing my honest experiences and showing the world that having a chronic illness does not always have to be so grim. I like to try and help other people who are suffering from similar problems, and to help them not feel so alone. Over the years of blogging, I've had lots of lovely feedback. I have suggested things that readers would never have thought of, given people reassurance that they're not the only person suffering from their problems, and inspired them to remain positive. All this wonderful feedback has led me to want to write this book. To spread my knowledge further, to dig into my past, and share how life can really be like with a chronic illness. This book is about me being transparent about my life Living with the Wolf. No lies, no exaggerations, just the honest truth. Inside this book, you will get to know all about me and my life Living with the Wolf. You will learn about my journey to getting diagnosed with Lupus, Sjogren's, Raynaud's, and Asthma. I talk about my experiences with different treatments, hospital admissions, and other problems I stumbled across along the way. I talk about how I deal with mental health, how to travel with a chronic illness, how I keep fit and healthy, and I share some of my favourite recipes that taste great, are easy to make, and are healthy and nutritious. But the biggest drive to writing this book is talking about How I Tamed the Wolf. How I changed my life around in just one year. My quality of life was deteriorating quicker than I could count to ten. But now, I feel as good as I did pre-diagnosis. I haven't cured the wolf, but I've tamed it to a level where I can live my life once again, and I couldn't be happier! Now, I want to share it with you. At the time of writing this book, I am shielding at home from COVID-19 due to being in the Clinically Extremely Vulnerable group. For anyone who isn't aware of the shielding group, the UK Government has put together a list of people who are most vulnerable to and most likely to need hospital treatment if they were to catch COVID-19. Everyone in the shielding group has been asked to isolate at home, where it is safest. At the start of writing this book, I was in the first UK lockdown, on week 13 / day 91 of shielding. I have only left the house for exercise or hospital / doctor appointments. I am now in the UK's third lockdown and I have given up counting the number of days I have been shielding! If I were to tell you things have been plain sailing, I would be lying. Though, I am incredibly grateful to have a system like shielding in place to protect and keep me safe. One of the positive things to have come out from me shielding for a long period of time is that it has given me time to focus on writing this book. Now, grab your cup of tea (or whatever you like to drink!) find a comfy chair, sit back, and enjoy.

Book Description
The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that between .5 and 1.5 million people have been diagnosed with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that can attack any part of the body. The elusive nature of the illness often becomes a source of overwhelming helplessness and frustration to its victims, their loved ones, and the physicians who treat it. Narrated through both poetry and prose, Travels with the Wolf is an autobiographical account of Melissa Anne Goldstein's experiences with lupus. It is her story of becoming a young woman, writer, and teacher in the presence of severe, often debilitating disease. It is an exploration of her relationships with her family and friends as the illness steals into their lives, and the record of her struggle to maintain her independence and identity despite disease. Finally, it is an author's journey to find her spiritual core. This book is not just about lupus. Goldstein uses her experience of the illness as well as sociological, literary, and historical research, to portray and understand the dilemmas faced by the chronically ill person in our society. In her conclusion, she calls for reform of today's health care system, which does not meet the needs of the chronically ill or their physicians.

Book Description
I had ample motivation for writing this book. The possibility of some new income certainly has to enter a writers mind before undertaking such a venture, though I do not have any illusions of a big payday. I also wanted to see how difficult it is to get published for the first time and if it was even possible for someone like me, whose experience included almost exclusively newspaper work. But there were other, more important considerations. The experience was therapeutic, and I honestly wanted the world to see more clearly how tough living with a terminal illness can be. Maybe those who read the book will have a newfound compassion and understanding for those who suffer daily, and maybe they will find ways, if only small gestures, to make the patients life more fulfilling. For someone with bad lungs, there is ample time to write and watch television. I can only tolerate so many reruns of insulting sitcoms, so I chose to give the book a shot. Regardless of how well it sells, I am glad I did it. I hope the family and friends of those who suffer from lupus and related diseases come to better understand what their loved ones endure and, as a result, show them the love they deserve. The book is meant to allow people to experience, if only through words, what the lupus patient suffers regularly: pain, frustration, hopelessness, and depressionall wrapped in one destructive package.

Book Description
In the summer of 1974, Jill Sauceman was ready to begin the nursing program at East Tennessee State University. During her college physical her doctor noticed something out of the ordinary-Jill's kidneys were not functioning properly. He diagnosed her with lupus nephritis, a disease she had never heard of before. Instead of preparing for college, she was made acutely aware of her own mortality at a young age and was told that within ten to fifteen years of the diagnosis, she would be on dialysis or would require a kidney transplant. She fought through total hip replacements and debilitating flare-ups of lupus and managed to save her increasingly weakened kidneys until 2014, when she received a life-saving kidney transplant from an anonymous donor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. At the time, her kidney function had deteriorated to less than seven percent. This book recounts her life story and how, in 1978, she met the person who would help her through the struggles and celebrate her triumphs. The marriage of Fred and Jill Sauceman has survived for almost forty years. Advised by a family doctor never to marry her, Fred ignored that advice and followed his heart. This book also sends a strong message about the need for organ donation, and as Jill's transplant surgeon says, "too many valuable organs are being buried." Book jacket.
