Many Of the books are out of print and can be had only through second-hand dealers. These books are indicated by_a star. Some Of the books are published by the author's, others by some local publisher. These, also, can usually be had only through dealers in second-hand books. Many historical sermons and addresses are to be had in pamphlet form. In each county there are' usually one or more persons interested in local history who can furnish much information regarding the historical publications relating to the locality. SO far as the information can be had, this list will give the title, author, date of publication and probable cost of the books mentioned. If all this information is not available, then all that is available will be given in the hope that some one in the locality Of which the' book treats can give the remainder. SO far as practicable, a brief annotation is given. In many cases this can not be furnished as the books are not accessible. Something of the kind seemed necessary in recounting the services of the New York troops on that historic field, to show not only their participation in the fighting, but, also, the relation which their action bore to other and more general events as to time, order, and place. The movements of each New York regiment and battery during the bat tle are fully described elsewhere in the historical sketches and addresses pub lished in this report; but the bearing which their action had on other movements can be explained only in some connected narrative reciting the entire story of the battle, and in which the services of each command is told in its due connection. Excerpt from History and Government of New York Here they found a permanent home and were gradually organized into five distinct tribes or nations known as the Mohawks, the Oneidas, the Onondagas, the Cayugas, and the Senecas. The Mohawks, driven from their territory in the vicinity of Montreal and Quebec, came into the valley of the river which bears their name. The Senecas, moving gradually from the highlands of southwestern New York, occupied the fertile plains of the Genesee. Even before this time it is probable that the Oneidas, the Onondagas, and the Cayugas had established themselves in the hill country surrounding the "finger" lakes of central New York. The names given to these tribes are in part the English equivalents of Indian words; and the localities in which they lived are still indicated by the rivers and lakes which bear their names.
