Book Description
Excerpt from History of the State of New York, Vol. 2 When this volume was begun, it was my purpose to bring its contents down to the accession of Queen Anne of England, and the chapters embracing the years between 1691 and 17 02 are ready for the printer. But, by the affluence of original authorities, and the temptation to use them, perhaps, too liberally, this book, in spite of laborious condensation, may have grown unfashionably large; and these chapters must be reserved for another volume should the public manifest a desire to learn more of early New York, down to the inauguration of Washington. Book Description
Excerpt from New York at Gettysburg The following chronicle of events at the battle of Gettysburg is inserted here as introductory to the main body of the report. Something of the kind seemed necessary in recounting the services of the New York troops on that historic field, to show not only their participation in the fighting, but, also, the relation which their action bore to other and more general events as to time, order, and place. The movements of each New York regiment and battery during the bat tle are fully described elsewhere in the historical sketches and addresses pub lished in this report; but the bearing which their action had on other movements can be explained only in some connected narrative reciting the entire story of the battle, and in which the services of each command is told in its due connection. Another history of Gettysburg may seem superfluous and presumptious. But there were New York regiments and batteries in every corps, in every division except one, and in forty-six brigades of the Union army. They fought and fell on every portion of the field. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the City of New York The design of the author of this volume has been to trace the progress of the city of New York in such a manner as to illustrate, to the reader of the present day, its gradual development, from a Wilderness condition, through the maturing stages of a hamlet, a \illage and a city. It has been his study to follow, with minute attention, the different paths pursued in extending the habitations of the town, and to 'note the circumstances which Operated to establish the lines of the early thoroughfares, and the laying out of the plan of that part of the city originally settled. The names. Family circumstances, and 'many biographical facts connected with the inhabitants of the town, in verv early times, will be found amply referred to in the body of the work. And also in the Appendix. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Memorial History of the City of New York Manna-hata, the handsomest and most pleasant country that man can behold. Henry Hudson. The Island of New-York is the most beautiful island that I have ever seen. Hessian Officer, in "Stone's Revolutionary Letters," 1891. She is a Mart of Nations. The crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honorable of the earth. Isaiah, xxiii. History maketh a young man to be old, without either wrinkles or gray hairs, privileging him with the experience of age without either the infirmities or inconveniences thereof. Thomas Fuller. This is a great fault in a chronicler, to turn parasite: an absolute history should be in fear of none; neither should he write anything more than truth, for friendship, or else for hate, but keep himself equal and constant in all his discourses. Simon N. H. Linguet. Industrious persons, by an exact and scrupulous diligence and observation, out of the monuments, names, words, proverbs, traditions, private recordes and evidences, fragments of stories, passages of bookes that concern not story, and the like, we doe save and recover somewhat from the deluge of Time. Francis Bacon. They who make researches into Antiquity may be said to passe often through many dark lobbies and dusky places before they come to the Aula lucis, the great hall of light; they must repair to old Archives and peruse many molded and inoth-eaten records, and so bring to light, as it were, out of darkness, to inform the present world what the former did, and make us see truth through our Ancestor's eyes. James Howell. I was surprised to find how few, if any, of my fellow-citizens were aware that New-York had ever been called New Amsterdam, or had heard of the names of its early Dutch governors, or cared a straw about their ancient Dutch progenitors. A history to serve as a foundation, on which other historians may hereafter raise a noble superstructure, swelling in process of time, until Knickerbocker's New-York may be equally voluminous with Gibbou's Rome, or Hume and Smollett's England. Washington Irving. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from History and Government of New York Here they found a permanent home and were gradually organized into five distinct tribes or nations known as the Mohawks, the Oneidas, the Onondagas, the Cayugas, and the Senecas. The Mohawks, driven from their territory in the vicinity of Montreal and Quebec, came into the valley of the river which bears their name. The Senecas, moving gradually from the highlands of southwestern New York, occupied the fertile plains of the Genesee. Even before this time it is probable that the Oneidas, the Onondagas, and the Cayugas had established themselves in the hill country surrounding the "finger" lakes of central New York. The names given to these tribes are in part the English equivalents of Indian words; and the localities in which they lived are still indicated by the rivers and lakes which bear their names.
