Book Description
Excerpt from Lincoln and the Bible Book, with his son Tad standing by his side. The book looks like a Bible. It was not a Bible, however, but one of the old time photograph albums. Lincoln told his friend Noah Brooks that he was concerned lest people would think he was pretending to read the Bible to Tad, and that thus the picture would go out as a false pretense. But Lincoln need not have been concerned on that score, for most of the people knew that he was, at that time at least, a con stant reader of the Bible, and that he quoted frequently from its pages in his. Book Description
Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. For America, reliance has been placed on Professor Max Farrand's Development of the United States and C. Chesterton's History of the United States, and for the lighter side of Puritanism, where the clash of armies and the wranglings of politicians and sectaries are not heard, Professor Dowden's Puritan and Angli can has met every need. These have been the chief sources drawn upon for this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Abraham Lincoln carried in his pocket a spiritual book of days, titled A Believer's Daily Treasure, which was originally published in the mid-1800s by the Religious Tract Society of London, England. There is speculation that the devotional may have been given to Lincoln by his wife Mary. Applewood's 2015 edition of the book includes an introduction by Carl Sandburg, which was first published in a 1957 edition. Said Sandburg, "... it is new testimony that he was a man of profound faith."
