Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of George Washington In the year 1486, a foot traveller, holding a boy by the hand, stopped at the gate of a convent in Spain, to ask for some bread and water for his wearied child. While he was receiving it from a kind Friar, he gave him a history of himself, and told him for what purpose he had come into that country. At that time, the inhabitants of Europe, Asia, and Africa, did not know that there was any other land than those continents, and some islands not very distant from them. The most learned men, who were endeavouring to increase their knowledge of geography, thought that the ocean surrounded those countries like a great belt, and Christopher Columbus, the stranger who stood at the convent gate, was perhaps the first person who thought that belt might be crossed to the land on the opposite side; which was supposed to be the eastern part of Asia. He vas born about the year 1436, and was the son of a wool-comber, who lived in a city of Italy, called Genoa, and Avho was too poor to give him much education; but Columbus was very attentive to the instructions which he received in the few years that he went to school. Excerpt from Life of George Washington, Vol. 3 Washington's head-quarters at first were in what was called the Freemason's Tavern, on the north side of the village green. His troops were encamped about the vicinity of the village, at first in tents, until they could build log huts for shelter against the winter's cold. The main encampment was near Bottle Hill. Book Description
"In the present volume a clear narrative has been attempted in a very condensed form, omitting and avoiding such technical and abstruse expressions as frequently occur in larger works, and aiming chiefly to be understood by the boys for whom it has been written. In preparing it the writer is largely indebted to the three able biographers above mentioned, especially Sparks and Irving, to whose full and detailed accounts she refers all those who wish to study the subject more minutely."--Preface.

Book Description
Excerpt from Life of George Washington, Vol. 1 of 3 The following work has long been announced as forth-coming, to the great annoyance of the author. It was, indeed, commenced several years since, but the prosecution of it has been repeatedly interrupted by other occupations, by a long absence in Europe, and by occasional derangement of health. It is only within the last two or three years that I have been able to apply myself to it steadily. This is stated to account for the delay in its publication. The present volume treats of the earlier part of Washington's life previous to the war of the Revolution, giving his expeditions into the wilderness, his campaigns on the frontier in the old French war, and the other "experience," by which his character was formed, and he was gradually trained up and prepared for his great destiny. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of George Washington: In Words of One Syllable The life story of a public man cannot help being to some extent the same thing as a history of the times in which he lived, and to the case of none does this remark apply with more force than to that of the "Father of his Country;" which very title shows the degree to which the personality of its bearer became identified with the public life of the nation. While a great deal of the space in this book, consequently, has had to be devoted to American Revolutionary History, it is hoped that excess in this direction has been avoided, and that the main purpose of the work will be attained, i. e. to give its young readers a distinct and vivid idea of the exalted character and priceless services of Washington, so far as these can be brought within the understanding of a child.
