Book Description
Excerpt from Life of Rev. James Needham: The Oldest Methodist Preacher If Father Needham had died forty years ago, his life would have deserved a permanent record as a valuable contribution to the early history of Methodism in North Carolina. The value of a biography is largely determined by the usefulness of the life and by the faithfulness of the biographer in reproducing that life on the printed page. If justice were done to this life, instead of this booklet, a large and valuable volume would now be issued from the press. I have gathered suggestions from biography and facts from children and friends, but much I remember as he told it to me while we labored together. If I had expected to write this sketch, I could have known much more. With limited information and time, I give to the public this little book, and it is hoped that it will serve to keep fresh in the minds of many friends a few remarkable facts of this remarkable man of God. Naomi "Omie" Wise
Author: Hal E. Pugh
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476690138
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 219
Book Description
Naomi "Omie" Wise was drowned by her lover in the waters of North Carolina's Deep River in 1807, and her murder has been remembered in ballad and story for well over two centuries. Mistakes, romanticization and misremembering have been injected into Naomi's biography over time, blurring the line between reality and fiction. The authors of this book, whose family has lived in the Deep River area since the 18th century, are descendants of many of the people who knew Naomi Wise or were involved in her murder investigation. This is the story of a young woman betrayed and how her death gave way to the folk traditions by which she is remembered today. The book sheds light on the plight of impoverished women in early America and details the fascinating inner workings of the Piedmont North Carolina Quaker community that cared for Naomi in her final years and kept her memory alive.
