It was a battle he ultimately lost, along with his head on the executioners block. Balboa was a young man when Columbus returned from discovering America, and as soon as he was able, he gained passage to the New World. After serving as a military hand on an expedition to the coast of Panama, he settled on Hispaniola to try to make his fortune.

There are more than just dry facts in this book. It has a whiff of salt air, the clash of empires, cross-cultural beach encounters and personal adventure.
