Ce document, adopté par l'Assemblée générale des Nations unies dans la nuit du 10 décembre 1948, marquait l'aboutissement d'un long processus diplomatique ayant duré près de trois ans au cours duquel les États-Unis jouèrent un rôle déterminant dans son élaboration.
