L'hospitalité répond aux caractéristiques de ces expériences éthiques fondamentales qui tissent la vie des êtres humains. Dans l'échange de l'hospitalité se manifeste la première forme d'une humanité générale. L'hospitalité est une catégorie qui permet d'interpréter la situation générale de l'homme dans le monde. Que nous soyons les hôtes les uns des autres signifie que notre situation dans le monde répond à une structure de la réception et de la rencontre, qu'il existe une liberté pour donner et pour recevoir au-delà des impératifs de la réciprocité. Dans une certaine mesure, ce livre propose une éthique de la contrariété face à une éthique de l'initiative, et vise une idée de la vie bonne plus intéressée à laisser ouverte la possibilité de s'émouvoir qu'à se protéger de toute irruption de l'inattendu. La compétence éthique fondamentale consiste à s'ouvrir vers le tout autre et les autres, à être accessible aux sollicitations du monde, attentif à ce qui est différent de soi-même. Il y a une certaine supériorité morale des petites manies sur l'autosuffisance, de l'amour vulnérable sur le contrôle et la modération, de la générosité de la passion sur la prudence rationnelle, de l'excès sur la simple réciprocité. L'éthique de l'hospitalité intervient à propos dans un moment culturel tiraillé par le conflit entre les impératifs de la modernisation et de la croissance, d'une part, et d'autre part, par les exigences d'une éthique de la conservation, de la prudence et de la protection. Face à la fragilité générale du monde, nous assistons à l'émergence d'une forte sensibilité, d'une nouvelle sollicitude et d'un souci de l'autre. Dans ce contexte, le devoir des individus ne consiste pas à se protéger de la société, mais à la défendre, à prendre soin d'un tissu social en dehors duquel aucune identité ne peut se réaliser.

When groups feature in political philosophy, it is usually in one of three contexts: the redressing of past or current injustices suffered by ethnic or cultural minorities; the nature and scope of group rights; and questions around how institutions are supposed to treat a certain specific identity/cultural/ethnic group. What is missing from these debates is a comprehensive analysis of groups as both agents and objects of social policies. While this has been subject to much scrutiny by sociologists and social psychologists, it has received less attention from a normative and philosophical point of view. This volume asks: what problems are posed to political philosophy by a collection of individuals who act or are treated in a collective way? Focusing not only on ways in which institutions should treat groups, but also on the normative implications of considering groups as possible social agents, when acting either in vertical relations with the state or in horizontal relations with other groups (or individuals), this book explores these issues from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The Simple Past came out in 1954, and both in France and its author’s native Morocco the book caused an explosion of fury. The protagonist, who shares the author’s name, Driss, comes from a Moroccan family of means, his father a self-made tea merchant, the most devout of Muslims, quick to be provoked and ready to lash out verbally or physically, continually bent on subduing his timid wife and many children to his iron and ever-righteous will. He is known, simply, as the Lord, and Driss, who is in high school, is in full revolt against both him and the French colonial authorities, for whom, as much as for his father, he is no one. Driss Chraïbi’s classic coming-of-age story is about colonialism, Islam, the subjection of women, and finding, as his novel does, a voice that is as cutting and coruscating as it is original and free.
