En Afrique de l'Ouest, les médicaments traditionnels améliorés (MTA) sont des médicaments issus de la pharmacopée traditionnelle locale, dont la toxicité a été déterminée, à activité pharmacologique confirmée par la recherche, à dosage quantifié et à qualité contrôlée lors de leur mise sur le marché. Ils ont reçu une AMM et détiennent pour certains le statut de médicament essentiel. La production et la commercialisation de ces MTA s'inscrivent plus largement dans les préconisations de l'OMS visant l'intégration des médecines traditionnelles dans les systèmes de santé nationaux. Ce travail vise à recenser les MTA produits et commercialisés dans certains pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest (Mali, Burkina-Faso, Ghana, Guinée, Sénégal et Côte d'Ivoire). Par le biais d'une recherche bibliographique et d'enquêtes ont été rassemblées des informations et publications, permettant de recenser les MTA présents dans ces pays, des recommandations d'usage et des études validant l'usage et la sécurité de ces MTA. 52 MTA ont pu être recensés, dont la majorité ont fait l'objet d'études approfondies validant la qualité, l'efficacité et la sécurité de ces médicaments. Les contraintes liées à leur usage ne se situent pas au niveau de la légitimation scientifique (preuve d'efficacité et non toxicité) mais sont plutôt de nature industrielle entravant la production, donc la disponibilité sur le marché.

This book examines the nature and significance of the impact of population growth on the weIl-being of developing countries-in particular, the effects on economic growth, education, health, food supply, housing, poverty, and the environment. In addition, because family planning programmes often significantly affect population growth, the study examines the impacts of family planning on fertility and health, and the human rights implications of family planning programmes. In considering the book's conclusions about the impact of population growth on development, four caveats should be noted. First, the effects of population growth vary from place to place and over time. Thus, blanket statements about overall effects often cannot be made. Where possible, the authors note the contexts in which population effects are strongest and weakest. Second, all of the outcomes examined in this book are influenced by factors other than population growth. Moreover, the impact of population growth may itself vary according to the presence or absence of other factors. This again makes bl anket statements about the effects of population growth difficult.
