Book Description
Excerpt from Legends and Popular Tales of the Basque People Yet this fact does not prove that it is only in traditional beliefs where the origin of the evil is to be sought for. So long as we are unable to define the limits which separate truth from error in space and time, in the physical and moral worlds, man will ever allow himself to be carried away by the irresistible yearning for that which is unknown and incomprehensible, to seek in the mysterious regions of fancy for abundant food to satisfy his curiosity, and some explanation for that which he cannot understand. By no other means is it comprehensible how superstition has always subsisted in every race, whatever be the religious profession or degree of culture it may have reached, or age in which it existed. The object may have changed, the form may have varied, as it has always done under the various influences exercised by religion, climate, customs, and other causes; nevertheless superstition has not ceased to pervade and dominate the spirit-as powerfully now as it has ever done. It is true that in our days the belief in witches is gone by, but, on the other hand, a world of spirits have risen up, or rather been discovered, as many spiritualists assert, who assume to live in perfect union with them. Book Description
In this volume you will find 13 illustrated Popular Tales from the Basque region of Spain. Here you will find tales like Aquelarre, Arguiduna, The Song of Lamia, the Prophecy of Lara, the Virgin of the Five Towns in which mermaids, heroes, magical horns and ghosts abound. If you have ever travelled through the province of Galicia in North Western Spain, you can’t fail to notice the Celtic influences in the region’s art and culture. So it is therefore not surprising to also find the story of Jaun-Zuria - A Prince Of Erin included in this volume. So take some time out and travel back to a period before television, or even radio for that matter, to a time when families would gather around a crackling and spitting hearth and granddad or grandma, or an uncle or aunt, would delight and captivate their audience with stories passed on to them from their parents and grandparents. This collection of Basque legends, fairy tales, ballads, and popular stories having their origin in the ancient traditions which formed a portion of the sacred inheritance bequeathed to the Basque people by their forefathers, and handed down by word of mouth from generation to generation. These tales constitute the archives of the Basque people, the treasures of their science and of their beliefs; they are the records of the lives of their forefathers, the landmarks of the grandeur of their past history. In the midst of the great revolutions which have agitated the whole of Europe, causing radical changes, levelling to the ground or converting into ruins great empires, powerful nationalities, monuments; sweeping away languages, and even the very races themselves--the Basques have somehow passed unscathed through the many storms of devastation, preserving intact their nationality, institutions, laws, language, and customs. Book Description
Excerpt from Spanish Legendary Tales The mere fact that they exist in vast numbers, and that many of them bear upon the same subject, renders it necessary that, if they are to be remembered at all, they must be remembered with verbal accuracy; otherwise they would in a short time become hope lessly confused one with another. One of the most popular subjects of Spanish folk-lore is the Christ of the Vega. I have myself heard at least a dozen legends turning on this theme; and many more versions must certainly exist. It would be impossible to keep these various stories apart in the popular memory, unless they had become, so to speak, stereo typed. And this.is the case with the majority of Spanish prose legends. They have assumed, in the course of time, a fixed and traditional shape, in their words no less than in their subjects. It is a truism that the memory of those who cannot read or write is, on the average, stronger than that of 'those who have had a literary education. When once education is diffused among the masses of the Spanish people, those legends which have not been committed to writing will be gradually lost. The new interests which education brings with it will also weaken among the people those tastes to which tales of the marvellous appeal. But this time seems still to be distant in Spain..
