Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism, Vol. 1 This work is based upon a course of Lectures delivered by one of us in the College de France in the last few years. It will comprise two parts: the first, which is principally theoretical, forms the present volume; the second, which will be more experimental in character, will be devoted to the examination of the various phenomena, the methods of measurement, and the principal applications. This method of treatment seemed to us to present great advantages. The phenomena are, in fact, almost always very complicated, especially in the case of electricity; and to understand all the details which these phenomena involve often requires a more extensive knowledge than that furnished in the chapters with which they are more immediately connected. The explanation of the experiments will, therefore, be materially facilitated by a preliminary account of the general principles of the science. After having stated and co-ordinated the facts which serve to establish the theory, we have investigated the mechanical consequences. This first volume forms, accordingly, a distinct work; and we might express the idea which has guided us by considering it as an Essay on the Mechanical Theory of Electricity, if such a title did not seem too ambitious. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Electricity, Vol. 1: Laboratory and Lecture Course, for First Year Students of Electrical Engineering, Based on the International Definitions of the Electrical Units; Current, Pressure, Resistance, Energy, Power and Cells Exactly ten years have elapsed since the preface to the first edition of this book was written - a decade which has seen a'vast development in the applications of elec tricity to industrial purposes, and the springing up in all parts of the kingdom of Technical Schools and Colleges where much attention is devoted to the study of electro technics. Hence, to day it IS far more easy for a student to connect his experimental apparatus with the electric light mains and use a comparatively large current at a pressure of 100 volts, than it was in 1886 to obtain a small current at a much lower pressure from the battery which he had to set up for the purpose. This possibility of carrying out the experiments on a larger scale has led to considerable simplification in certain cases; for ex ample, ih experimentally determining the heat equivalent of electric energy, it 'is no longer necessary to distract the beginner's attention with a variety of corrections for the loss of heat, &c. Book Description
Excerpt from Course of Lectures on Electricity: Delivered Before the Society of Arts The researches of our philosophers in a worthy manner is no easy task, and requires a special aptitude, and I have felt that to attempt such a work was a bold undertaking. Admirable works of this character on some of the sister sciences have already appeared; but in the science of electricity there has been a vacant space, which I have done my best to try to fill up. These lectures have no pretension to form an exhaustive treatise on electricity; but I trust they may be found to be a useful introduction' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
