Lorsqu'on évoque le TNP, c'est Jean Vilar, le Palais de Chaillot, la France des années 1950, qui viennent à l'esprit. Le TNP pourtant naît en 1920, installé dans la salle des fêtes du Trocadéro. On a oublié Firmin Gémier, l'artisan de sa fondation, son premier directeur, celui dont Jean Vilar parlait comme d'un père ou d'un frère aîné. Elève d'Antoine, patron de Charles Dullin ou de Gaston Baty, Firmin Gémier est un maillon déterminant dans l'artisanat théâtral du XXe siècle. Acteur, metteur en scène, directeur du Théâtre Antoine, puis du TNP et de l'Odéon, il avance à tâtons, par réajustements successifs. Homme de l'oralité et de la pratique partagée, il répugne à ce travers de clerc qui impose la glose, mais il a pourtant écrit. Les textes théoriques de Firmin Gémier ont été rassemblés ici en une anthologie inédite. A travers la fougue d'une écriture militante, ils restituent le combat d'un homme pour une esthétique politique à laquelle son théâtre donne forme : l'art populaire. Ces textes témoignent aussi d'un certain état du théâtre français entre 1901 et 1930. Mais les options qu'ils arrêtent, les problématiques qu'ils suscitent nourrissent nos interrogations d'aujourd'hui.
