Book Description
Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux (1636-1711) was a French poet and critic. He was brought up to the law, but devoted to letters, associating himself with La Fontaine, Racine, and Moliere. He was the author of Satires, and Epistles, L'Art Poetique (1683) and Le Lutrin (1674), in which he attacked and employed his wit against what he perceived to be the bad taste of his time. Boileau did much to reform the prevailing form of French poetry, as Blaise Pascal did to reform the prose, and was for long the law-giver of Parnassus. He was greatly influenced by Horace. Numerous editions of Boileau's works were published during his lifetime. The last of these, l'OEuvres Diverses (1701), known as the "favourite" edition of the poet, was reprinted with variants and notes by Alphonse Pauly (2 vols., 1894). The critical text of his works was established by Berriat Saint-Prix, OEuvres de Boileau (4 vols., 1830-1837), who made use of some 350 editions.
