L'utilisation d'une cendre volante en mélange avec du ciment Portland présente un intérêt économique dans la mesure ou les performances du matériau obtenu en employant ce sous-produit sont satisfaisantes. Les cendres volantes sulfo-calciques de Gardanne sont marquées par une forte teneur en chaux vive qui interdit leur emploi dans les bétons à cause des dégradations provoquées par le gonflement ultérieur des grains de chaux. Nous avons mis au point un procedé breveté permettant d'éteindre la chaux vive présente dans ces cendres. Nous avons réalisé des pâtes durcies par hydratation d'un ciment portland seul, comme référence, et de liants composés d'un mélange de ce ciment et de cendres. Nous avons étudié l'évolution comparée avec l'âge de la structure poreuse, du degré d'hydratation et de la résistance en compression de ces pâtes durcies en faisant varier le rapport eau/liant. Cette étude nous a permis de déterminer la résistance à la compression en fonction de ces deux caractéristiques et en appliquant la formule de powers. Nous avons aussi étudié l'influence de la substitution du ciment par un mélange de cendres sulfo-calciques et silico-alumineuses. Ce mélange est bénéfique pour la résistance à la compression des pâtes durcies. Par un traitement thermique, il a été possible d'accélérer le durcissement et de tester rapidement l'aptitude d'une cendre volante à contribuer au développement des caractéristiques de la pâte durcie. La substitution d'une partie du ciment par les cendres volantes affecte le durcissement et l'hydratation, en donnant lieu à un changement des caractéristiques physiques et mécaniques des pâtes durcies
