Compte tenu de la valeur des patients et de la tendance procédurière de leurs propriétaires, la Responsabilité Civile Professionnelle des vétérinaires soignant des chevaux est mise à mal depuis plusieurs années. Le contexte actuel expose en outre la profession à de nouveaux changements. L'activité équine en plein essor s'ouvre à davantage de vétérinaires initialement mixtes. Le marché de l'assurance en RCP ne répond jamais exactement à la demande des vétérinaires soucieux d'être garantis pour des valeurs importantes. Les points les plus problématiques, selon les vétérinaires et assureurs, sont globalement : la forte sinistralité, les augmentations de primes, les résiliations de contrats, les jurisprudences défavorables aux vétérinaires. Plusieurs hypothèses répondant à ce constat sont abordées. La requête préventive du consentement éclairé reste la principale approche. La mutualisation du risque à l'échelle professionnelle, sur le modèle anglais du VDS pourrait être une solution.
