Protected areas were originally established as recreational spaces and to protect some components of nature; however, today they are also expected to provide an increasing range of benefits to an array of people. El turismo genera desarrollo local. Esta es una afirmacion que de manera implicita o explicita ha motivado numerosas investigaciones y propuestas de desarrollo turistico. No obstante, los resultados que se observan en diversos destinos turisticos, generalmente no cumplen con los objetivos de desarrollo esperados. A partir de la idea de que diferentes modelos de desarrollo turistico tienen un impacto diferente en el proceso de desarrollo local. El enfoque adoptado privilegia los aspectos economicos y utiliza como puente el concepto de competitividad. En su aplicacion a un contexto especifico, se comparan los destinos turisticos de Pinamar y de Villa Gesell, ambas localidades ubicadas sobre la costa atlantica de Argentina. A partir de la descripcion de los respectivos clusters turisticos, se identifican dos modelos de desarrollo turistico y su diferencial impacto en el desarrollo local."
