Summary Based on the experiences of past designs and the outcome of recent studies in the comparisons of low-level image processing architectures, a pipelined system for real time low-image processing has been designed and realized in CMOS technology. To minimize design pitfalls, a study was performed to the details of the design solutions that have been found in embodimentsof the three main architectural groups of image processing; the Square Processor Arrays, the Linear Processor Arrays and the Pipelines. This is reflected in a theoretical model. As the design is based on bitplane-wise processing of images, research was performed on the principles ofCellularLogic Processing of two dimensional images. of binary A methodology has been developed that is based on the transformation images using sets of Hit-or-Miss masks. This method appeared to be extendable to higher dimensional images. A theoretical model for the generation of break-point conditions in high dimensional images has been developed, and applied up to dimension three.

This thesis introduces a new image processing language (IPL) which is based on the domains and operations required to express common image processing algorithms in a high-level language. IPL is independent of any particular computer architecture. Its implementation on a computer can take advantage of the machine's architecture without affecting the correctness of algorithms written in it. IPL includes picture, mask, region, boundary, and histogram domains. Unary, binary, and fly operations are described for picture, mask, and region domains and several examples of their use are provided through the expression of several common image processing algorithms in IPL. IPL also includes several set and component selection operations. The IPL is implemented in Ada to provide a syntax for its use and a second description of its semantics. The Ada implementation of IPL has not been compiled or tested. (Author).

They include explicit picture query languages that augment alphanumeric data query langua ges as well as languages and command sets which are implicitly embedded in a pictorial information system but perform similar functions. It is worth mentioning that some forms of query languages can be transformed from a given set of natural language senten ces by using ATN (Augmented Transition Networks), which consequently allows for na turallanguage communication with information system.
