Le langage est, pour l'homme, a la fois outil et objet. Philosopher sur le langage, c'est donc s'interroger a la fois sur les formes et les limites de son pouvoir, st sur l'etrange nature de cette realite exterieure a nous et dont nous ne pouvons pourtant dissocier ce que nous appelons notre pensee. L'auteur, par inclination personnelle et non point par principe, choisit d'orienter son enquete selon le point de vue de la connaissance scientifique. Ainsi se propose-t-il d'abord de definir le role que joue le langage dans la constitution de la science. Il est alors conduit a examiner les pseudo-langages que celle-ci se construit, et, en precisant la fonction du symbolisme dans la connaissance objective, il met en lumiere, dans ce domaine, le privilege et l'infirmite des langues naturelles. C'est alors cette notion de langue naturelle qui devient le theme de sa reflexion : le linguiste en veut faire l'objet d'une science. Comment determine-t-il cet objet, par quelles demarches parvient-il a sa connaissance, qu'est-ce enfin qu'une " science du langage " ? Sur cette science, encore aujourd'hui peut-etre a l'etat naissant, le philosophe ne peut faire de pronostics. Du moins lui appartient-il, en dehors des querelles d'ecoles, de tenter de reconnaitre jusqu'ou l'on s'est avance dans la voie du savoir.

The roots of pragmatics reach back to Antiquity, especially to rhetoric as one of the three liberal arts. However, until the end of the 18th century proto-pragmatic insights tended to be consigned to the pragmatic, that is rhetoric, wastepaper basket and thus excluded from serious philosophical consideration.It can be said that pragmatics was conceived between 1780 and 1830 in Britain, but also in Germany and in France in post-Lockian and post-Kantian philosophies of language. These early 'conceptions' of pragmatics are described in the first part of the book.The second part of the book looks at pragmatic insights made between 1830 and 1880, when they were once more relegated to the philosophical and linguistic underground. The main stage was then occupied by a fact-hunting historical comparative linguistics on the one hand and a newly spiritualised philosophy on the other.In the last part the period between 1880 and 1930 is presented, when pragmatic insights flourished and were sought after systematically. This was due in part to a new upsurge in empiricism, positivism and later behaviourism in philosophy, linguistics and psychology. Between 1780 and 1930 philosophers, psychologists, sociologists and linguists came to see that language could only be studied in the context of dialogue, in the context of human life and finally as being a kind of human action itself.

L'epistemologie genetique ne se confond pas avec la psychologie gene tique et celle-ci n'est elle-meme pas identique a la psychologie de l'enfant. Cette derniere etudie l'enfant pour lui-meme, tandis que la psychologie genetique cherche dans l'etude de l'enfant la solution des problemes generaux, tels que celui du mecanisme de l'intelligence, de la perception, etc., car, ce n'est qu'en analysant la formation de tels mecanismes que l'on parvient a fournir leur explication causale. En effet, en psychologie comme en biologie, l'explication est inseparable du developpement. De meme l'epistemologie genetique a pour objet l'examen de la formation des connaissances comme telles, c'est-a-dire des relations cognitives entre Ie sujet et les objets: e1le fait donc la transition entre la psychologie genetique et l'epistemologie en general, qu'elle espere enrichir par la consideration du developpement. Mais si l'epistemologie comporte toujours des presuppositions psychologiques (meme dans les theories qui pretendent pouvoir negliger Ie sujet et reduire son activite a un simple {laquo}Iangage{raquo}), qu'il s'agit donc de sou mettre au controle de l'experience et des faits, il intervient en outre dans la theorie des connaissances des considerations de logique ou d'algebre generale, etc., qui ne re1event plus d~ la psychologie, mais de la formalisation ou de la deduction pure. L'epistemologie genetique est donc de par sa nature meme une recherche interdisciplinaire, ou la psychologie genetique joue un role necessaire mais nullement suffisant.
