Book Description
Excerpt from Laboratory Work in Physiological Chemistry This edition is greatly enlarged and indeed wholly re-written. The directions for laboratory work cover the three great food-stuffs, and the fluids and secretions of the body. Brief explanatory descriptions of the various sub stances and secretions studied are added in order to give the student a better survey of the subject matter as a whole. Every medical student should receive thorough drill in the laboratory, not merely in so-called urine analysis, but in the broader field of physiological chemistry. He should be taught to observe and to reason; to correlate the facts brought out in the laboratory in their relation to physiology, hygiene and disease. These notes have been prepared with the object of furthering such study, and it is hoped that they will prove as useful to others as to the author's own classes in the University of Michigan. The experimental work laid down in the following pages has been repeatedly verified in actual student work and the directions given are such as to insure results. The.author's classes devote the entire afternoon, daily, for three months to this work. Even with this amount of time at their disposal certain parts of physiological chemistry must be left untouched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Book Description
Excerpt from Directions for Laboratory Work in Physiological Chemistry: For the Use of Students The second edition of this Manual appears as the result of a thorough revision of the original edition, which was issued last year; numerous additions to the subject-matter have also been inserted. In its preparation the author has had in mind to provide a guide for systematic work in a course in Physiological Chemistry such as is given in the majority of the American Medical Schools. An attempt has been made to present, in experimental form, all of the essentials of the subject. At the same time, the experiments are simple and of a form which would not overstep the possibilities of equipment and time available in the average laboratory in physiological chemistry. Those facts which do not allow of simple experimental study have been ignored. The text preceding the experiments has been limited to an explanation merely sufficient for a correct understanding and performance of the work indicated, with the expectation that the laboratory course will be supplemented by lectures showing the important relationship of the pure chemistry of the subject to physiological and pathological processes. Book Description
Excerpt from Directions for Laboratory Work in Physiological Chemistry: For the Use of Students in the University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College As the title indicates, this little book is intended especially as a guide to the students in the course in Physiological Chemistry as given in the University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College. It makes no pretence of being more than this. On this account the subjects outlined are limited in number, while the individual experiments are described with considerable detail. Book Description
Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physiological Chemistry IN view of the results attained from the course given in physiological chemistry in this University, as well as the experience of others, the author is firmly convinced of the superiority of the laboratory method of instruction over the didactic, believing that it is only by practical work that the student can become familiar with the physio logical changes in progress in the animal body and their products. This book has been prepared with the aim of imparting accurate knowledge through the student's own observation. It has seemed advisable to include with the directions for experimental work a brief explanation of the facts observed, so as to call attention to their meaning; or, at times, to state others which are important, but which could not well be demonstrated in such a course as this. Some acquaintance with general chemistry and with chemical manipulation is presupposed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from An Intermediate Textbook of Physiological Chemistry: With Experiments The appended laboratory work has been drawn from the manual in use in my classes for the last five years. Much of the material has, of course, been drawn from other manuals. As the book is not intended to be an advanced text, the micro methods for the analysis of urine have not been included. I wish to acknowledge suggestions and corrections in the laboratory directions from various colleagues, particularly Dr. F. B. Kingsbury. I wish also to express my thanks to Dr. W. H. Hunter, who kindly volunteered to read the manuscript of the theoretical portion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Laboratory Hand-Book of Urine Analysis and Physiological Chemistry The Object of this book is to supply to students and practitioners of medicine a guide to a course in physiological chemistry and the examination Of the urine and the contents of the stomach. The first part of the book is taken up with simple exer cises in physiological chemistry, which it is hoped will give the student an elementary insight into the chemical side of physiological processes. While the exercises are not as full or as complete as might be desired, they are equal to the amount of time which is usually allotted to medical students in this subject. Of the part Of this book which deals with the urine and the gastric contents little remains to be said, except that, so far as possible, no tests have been given which do not rest on a good chemical foundation. The aim has been to give as few tests as possible, and these to be chosen for their suitability to purely clinical needs. N O operations have been described which have not undergone a thorough trial with students in the laboratory. In conclusion, I wish to thank Mr. Carroll D. Partridge for much help with the proof-reading, and Dr. C. N. B. Camac for the very useful diag nostic tables at the end of the book. Cornell university medical college, new york, September I, 1901.
