Book Description
Excerpt from Laboratory Methods in Agricultural Bacteriology Questions of a more special nature, which could not be adequately dealt with in this little book, have been taken up in detail in our Handbuch der landwirtschaftlichen Bakteriologie, where will also be found complete references. In response to requests from various quarters we have added in the Appendix, page 129, some remarks on the equipment of a bacteriological laboratory. The illustrations are, for the sake of clearness, mostly in the form of sketches drawn by Herr A. Reichert after our directions. For the photograms we have to acknowledge indebtedness to Herr 0. Schroter, lately assistant in the bacteriological laboratory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Agricultural Bacteriology: A Study of the Relation of Germ Life to the Farm Since the publication of the first edition of this work advance along all lines of bacteriology has been very rapid. Scarcely a phase of the relation of bacteria to agriculture has failed to receive substantial contributions. Much new information has been obtained, the relative importance of different subjects has been changed, and in a few points our previous conclusions have been corrected. These changes have been so considerable that in preparing this second edition it has been found necessary to rewrite the whole book in order to bring it up to the times. The subject has grown so large that it is difficult to include within the limits of one volume even the fundamental facts of the rapidly growing science, and many subjects of importance have been treated very briefly. The growing recognition of the importance of the subject to students of agriculture has caused agricultural schools and colleges to give to it an increasing amount of attention. For this reason this edition has been planned with special reference to its use by classes; and some changes in method of presentation have been adopted in order to make it more useful to students. For the same reason there has been added a somewhat extended set of experiments for elementary laboratory work. These laboratory directions are far from exhaustive and are designed simply to introduce the student to the methods of bacteriological work. The close relation of the functions of the higher fungi to the functions of bacteria has come to be fully realized to-day and has made it necessary to include more extended references to the higher fungi in this review. Book Description
Excerpt from Laboratory Methods for the Experimental Study of Immunity It is presumed that the student undertaking work in an advanced subject of this nature has had an elementary training in chemistry, general biology, bacteriology and pathology. It is imperative that the student be familiar with the ordinary technique in the handling of pathogenic micro-organisms and the care of inoculated animals. The experiments outlined are those which have proved. By experience to be the most serviceable in the illustration of the points under discussion in the lecture course which accompanies the experimental work. The experiments out lined comprise one year's work. For suggestions in regard to the presentation of this outline the writer is indebted to Professor H. T. Ricketts of the University of Chicago. Book Description
Excerpt from Bacteriological Methods: In Food and Drugs Laboratories With an Introduction to Micro-Analytical Methods The administration of the Federal Pure Food and Drugs Act and of the several State Pure Food and Drugs Laws has made the introduction of bacteriological methods into food and drugs laboratories a necessity. Because of the close relationship between the work of the bacteriologist and that of the micro-analyst, it is advised that, wherever possible, these two laboratory branches be combined in the most effectual cooperative manner. With such cooperation in mind, a brief introduction to micro-analytical methods is added. Fuller details on micro-technique will be found in special works on the microscopy of fibers, foods, spices, drugs, of water supplies, of sewage, etc. As is more fully set forth in the text, the bacteriological as well as micro-analytical methods in our food and drugs laboratories are not yet fully worked out, and the present volume is submitted hoping that it will be instrumental in bringing about a unification of methods and that it will perhaps also serve as a guide to the working out of newer and inadequately tested older methods. The volume is primarily intended as a guide to students who are interested in the bacteriological examination of foods and drugs. Its use as a laboratory guide presupposes a thorough knowledge of general bacteriology. Acknowledgments are made to the following authors for the use of illustrations: E. R. Stitt (Bacteriology, Blood Work and Animal Parasitology), R. L. Pitfield (Compend on Bacteriology), W. J. MacNeal (Pathogenic Micro-organisms), C. E. Marshall (Microbiology), John F. Anderson and Thomas B. McClintic (Method of Standardizing Disinfectants), and G. W. Hunter (Essentials of Biology). Book Description
Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Principles of Agriculture The work as presented in this manual had its beginning in at least two independent sources: (1) The method of preparing detailed exercises for teaching elementary general agriculture in secondary schools had its origin largely in the teaching and direction of H. B. Brownell, Professor of School Sciences, University of Nebraska. (2) The idea of prepar ing laboratory exercises in field crops and making available to schools the necessary supplies for teaching the same, Originated ten or twelve years ago with Professor's E. G. Mont'gomery and T. L. Lyon, both' formerly of Nebraska, but now at Cornell University. The manual of these two teachers, Examining and Grading Grains, has done much to encourage and syste matize laboratory study in field crops throughout the United States. It was largely the de mand for field crop material created by this manual which revived into life the abandonedidea of supplying field crop laboratory material which had formerly been carried on by the Department of Agronomy of the University of Nebraska. Without the use of ideas from these two sources, the work as presented in this manual could scarcely have been possible. Most of the laboratory exercises presented in this manual have passed through several mimeographed editions, and have been used in one or more of the following Nebraska schools: Teachers' College High School, Lincoln; School of Agriculture, Lincoln; School of Agriculture, Curtis. Laboratory instruction as here outlined is designed to accompany classroom instruction. A division of time that will probably fit most schools is as follows.
