Dans les modèles gravitant autour de la violence familiale, qui ont également été proposés, le recours à la violence chez les femmes est vu dans le contexte des antécédents de victimisation de ces dernières, de leurs expériences de traumatisme dans l'enfance et des symptômes dépressifs et post-traumatiques qui en découlent (Swan et Snow, 2006). [...] Bien que les hommes continuent à commettre la grande majorité des infractions avec violence, on reconnaît de plus en plus que les femmes peuvent recourir à la violence et le font effectivement, et que la perpétration par elles de certains types de crimes avec violence a augmenté au fil des ans, notamment pour des crimes donnant lieu à des voies de fait ou des voies de fait graves (Greenfeld et Sne [...] Pour tenter d'expliquer la perpétration accrue de crimes avec violence par les femmes, les défenseurs de la thèse de la libération, se situant dans un prolongement des théories sur la socialisation, soutiennent que les processus de socialisation ont progressivement changé avec la seconde vague de féminisme et l'émergence résultante des femmes dans des rôles non traditionnels (Adler, 1975). "Women have made significant inroads into politics in recent years, but in many parts of the world, their increased engagement has spurred physical attacks, intimidation, and harassment intended to deter their participation. This book provides the first comprehensive account of this phenomenon, exploring how women came to give these experiences a name - violence against women in politics - and lobbied for its increased recognition by citizens, states, and international organizations. Tracing how this concept emerged inductively on the global stage, the volume draws on research in multiple disciplines to resolve lingering ambiguities regarding its contours. It argues that this phenomenon is not simply a gendered extension of existing definitions of political violence privileging physical aggressions against political rivals. In the past twenty years Quebec women writers, including Aline Chamberland, Claire Dé, Suzanne Jacob, and Hélène Rioux, have created female characters who are fascinated with bold sexual actions and language, cruelty, and violence, at times culminating in infanticide and serial killing. Paula Ruth Gilbert argues that these Quebec feminist writers are "re-framing" gender. Violence and the Female Imagination explores whether these imagined women are striking out at an external other or harming themselves through acts of self-destruction and depression. Gilbert examines the degree to which women are imitating men in the outward direction of their anger and hostility and suggests that such "tough" women may be mocking men in their "macho" exploits of sexuality and violence. She illustrates the ways in which Quebec female authors are "feminizing" violence or re-envisioning gender in North American culture. Gilbert bridges methodological gaps and integrates history, sociology, literary theory, feminist theory, and other disciplinary approaches to provide a framework for the discussion of important ethical and aesthetic questions.
