Book Description
From the Foreword: -- Toulouse-Lautrec has often been the victim of legend, and this was true even in his own lifetime. In this biography, I have attempted to discover his real personality but it has not been easy. Although, at first sight, Lautrec's life may seem perfectly familiar, it is not enough, as has too often been done, simply to place him against the gaudy decor of Montmartre and imagine that all has been said. The bright lights of the Butte have concealed Lautrec more often than they have served to illuminate him. Moreover, as far as he was concerned, Montmartre was far from being merely a decor. It was not only the picturesque he found there, but naked humanity. He knew, better than anyone, the bitterness that lay behind the laughter. He was never deceived about men, things or himself. His life was short, dramatic about men, things or himself. His life was short, dramatic and tragic. Few men can ever have been more clearly aware of their destiny, nor lived it with greater lucidity than did Lautrec.
