This book is the final one in a series of four on Hegel as theologian, first presented as such in New Hegelian Essays (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2012). In From Narrative to Necessity (2012) we then set forth the essential theme of Hegel’s theology as the transcendence of “picture-thinking”. In a third volume, Reason’s Developing Self-Revelation (2013), we specified this same theme as humanity’s accomplished future (ultimate end of life, the Idea). Here, finally, we discover the reconciliation of Mind with itself as the nerve of Hegel’s thought. Hence, this book is subtitled “Logic as Form of the World”, picking up on Gottlob Frege’s rhetorical question, “What is the world without the reason?” The first chapter recapitulates that intimate union of God and man the Christian confessional movement would manifest, set forth here philosophically. This leads naturally to an identification of faith, the virtue, with the habit of rationality. Religious apologetic is found to fall short of philosophy, which forms a system (chapter 15). In “Logic and the World” (chapter18) we further specify such logical knowledge as issuing in rational will, called love in J. M. E. McTaggart’s Hegelian writings. Man himself, herself, is finally identified with Mind as both the uniquely determining “form” (the Idea) of our self-transcending nature, universalising the individual, individualising the universal, and, equally, form of “the world”. Here the thrust of Hegel’s metaphysics confirms those of Aristotle on this point. Last, after some historical and practical reflections (medieval thought, the clergy, Marxism), we end where we began, with the transforming effect of Hegel’s thought as developing the doctrine of a divine creation in particular, while also developing the doctrine of this development itself, in anticipatory development, therefore, of J. H. Newman’s classic essay of 1845 on The Development of Christian Doctrine.

This book is the result of a three-day conference held in April 2014 at the University of Montreal, Canada, discussing the relevance of the work of Hegel and Marx in today’s world, particularly with regard to the ecological, economic, political and anthropological crisis facing humanity. Accordingly, the book an exploration of the specific nature of the crisis we face both in our everyday lives and in the realm of theory. However, if indeed the necessity of a proper critique (Kritikos) is intimately linked to a state of crisis (Krisis), the conceptual frame necessary to produce such a critique may itself be in crisis. Among the vast number of critical oppositions to contemporary capitalism, what are the keys available to understand the present forms of human conditions, alienation and exploitation? Controversies and divisions among the different tendencies within the critical tradition tend to highlight the point that there is also a theoretical crisis, which prevents a proper diagnosis of the actual crisis, and prevents, in turn, a proper plan of action from being established. Looking back to Marx and Hegel allowed a return, if not to the sources, at least to two unavoidable influences among the various critical approaches to capitalism. Be it with or against Hegel and/or Marx, the criticisms of modernity, post-modernity and capitalism cannot neglect the shadows of these thinkers. Both Marx’s and Hegel’s philosophical, sociological and political enterprises must be linked historically to the will to diagnose and solve what they saw as the most important crises of their own time, from, in Hegel’s case, the spiritual crisis which followed the advent of modernity and its accompanying turmoil, to the social and political crisis caused by capitalism and the advent of a new industrial society, in Marx’s case. Both intellectual ventures are at every turn haunted by the notion of crisis. This book will appeal to anyone interested in Hegel’s and Marx’s philosophical and political theories. Wherever there is human life, there is meaning, and that is irrespective of age, culture, religion, education or social position. Merleau-Ponty is not a Marxist nor a communist. According to him, history is blind; it has no mind. He also finds a flaw in Freudianism. Flesh is an infinite universe full of stars and black holes. Following Merleau-Ponty, verity is devoiler, and devoiler is verity, but verity is never absolute. One must take a step back. There is light and there is shadow; they never coincide in human life. The shadow is always first, and no matter how one tries to run, he will never catch his shadow.
