El libro está compuesto de dos partes. La primera (capitulos, 1,2 y 3) presenta la concepción de la dialéctica, la lógica y la retórica. En ellos demuestra la primacía del procedimiento dialectico en el pensamiento Aristóteles y se enfatiza el origen dialectico de la lógica y la permanencia de los tipos de razonamiento dialectico en la lógica y en la retórica aristotélicas. La segunda parte analiza la influencia de la obra aristotélica en cuatro teorías contemporáneas sobre la argumentación: la nueva retórica de Perelman-Olbrechts, la lógica informal de S.E. Toulmin, la Pragma-dialectica de F. Van Eemeren y la teoría de la acción comunicativa de J. Habermas. Se concluye la viabilidad de la propuesta de Habermas para una teoría general de la argumentación que considere aspectos lógicos, dialecticos y retóricos del habla argumentativa.
