Belief after Freud confronts the psychoanalytic experience and the experience of faith. El problema del mal, tan decisivo y tan duro para la humanidad, es una de mis preocupaciones más permanentes. Me preocupó ya cuando estudiaba filosofía y se intensificó a lo largo de mi dedicación teológica. Últimamente he tratado de recoger -ampliándolos, fundamentándolos y explicándolos con mayor detalle- los numerosos trabajos que había ido publicando, tratando de ofrecerlos una síntesis orgánica. Pronunciar teodicea equivale a suscitar una confusión de significados y levantar una nube de sospechas. Todo se ha dicho: indispensable para la fe o fuente de ateísmo, fenómeno exclusivamente moderno o problema eterno, imposible o necesario.Nada más urgente, pues, que la claridad y el rigor, si se quiere alcanzar un mínimo de entendimiento. El mayor peligro reside en ceder a los planteamientos heredados, en recursos apresurados al misterio o en cubrir con retórica teológica lo que debiera ser el estricto trabajo del concepto. Será igualmente necesario atenerse al significado genuino de las propuestas, sin atribuir intenciones o sacar consecuencias que no están en la concepción de quien la propone. Finalmente, resulta indispensable estar dispuestos a asumir la dura disciplina de la epojé husserliana, es decir, abrirse a la cosa misma, sometiendo a crítica expresa los presupuestos espontáneos y las afirmaciones que parecen evidentes por el hecho de constituir una herencia acaso incuestionada durante siglos.

"Theodicy" is a book of philosophy by the German polymath Gottfried Leibniz published in 1710, whose optimistic approach to the problem of evil is thought to have inspired Voltaire's "Candide". Much of the work consists of a response to the ideas of the French philosopher Pierre Bayle, with whom Leibniz carried on a debate for many years. The "Theodicy" tries to justify the apparent imperfections of the world by claiming that it is optimal among all possible worlds. It must be the best possible and most balanced world, because it was created by an all powerful and all knowing God, who would not choose to create an imperfect world if a better world could be known to him or possible to exist. In effect, apparent flaws that can be identified in this world must exist in every possible world, because otherwise God would have chosen to create the world that excluded those flaws. Leibniz distinguishes three forms of evil: moral, physical, and metaphysical. Moral evil is sin, physical evil is pain, and metaphysical evil is limitation. God permits moral and physical evil for the sake of greater goods, and metaphysical evil is unavoidable since any created universe must necessarily fall short of God's absolute perfection.
