Book Description
The 1980s were an important decade for educational inquiry. It was the moment of the “linguistic turn,” with its emphasis on the role of language as a constructor of reality, a structuring agent for institutions such as schools, and a medium for translating knowledge into elements of power for processes of social regulation. Drawing on the work and insights of educational researcher Thomas S. Popkewitz, this book shows how the linguistic turn provided an alternative to both mainline educational research grounded in the ideals of political liberalism and the effort of neo-Marxists to challenge liberal thinking in favor of a scholarship based on class conflict and economic determinism.

Book Description
"This collection of 16 essays reveals provocative common ground between contemporary craft, architecture and decorative arts. The chief feature of the common ground is the integration of designing and making. Long considered the birthright of craftspeople, it is now the focus of contemporary architectural analysis. Scholars, architects and craftspeople - inspired by the historical precedent of the Bauhaus and architectural theorists such as Gottfried Semper - probe the contemporary relevance of the relationship between the design process, building or making methods and materials." "This volume includes essays by museum and gallery professionals that trace the historical precedents of their craft collections, the patrons who shaped them, and the current direction of institutional policies regarding the collecting and exhibiting of craft. Also included is a photo essay documenting the integration of craft and architecture in a case study of the Fuji Pavilion in the Montreal Botanical Garden."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Description
This collection of essays traces the attempts of one writing teacher to understand theoretically - and to respond pedagogically - to what happens when students from diverse backgrounds learn to use language in college.Bizzell begins from the assumption that democratic education requires us to attempt to educate all students, including those whose social or ethnic backgrounds may have offered them little experience with academic discourse. Over the ten-year period chronicled in these essays, she has seen herself primarily as an advocate for such students, sometimes called "basic writers."Bizzell's views on education for "critical consciousness," widely discussed in the writing field, are represented in most of the essays in this volume. But in the last few chapters, and in the intellectual autobiography written as the introduction to the volume, she calls her previous work into question on the grounds that her self-appointment as an advocate for basic writers may have been presumptous, and her hopes for the politically liberating effects of academic discourse misplaced. She concludes by calling for a theory of discourse that acknowledges the need to argue for values and pedagogy that can assist these arguements to proceed more inclusively than ever before. The essays in this volume constitute the main body of work in which Bizzell developed her influential and often cited ideas. Organized chronologically, they present a picture of how she has grappled with major issues in composition studies over the past decade. In the process, she sketches a trajectory for the development of composition studies as an academic discipline.
