Neoliberal economic theories are powerful because their domestic translators make them go local, hybridizing global scripts with local ideas. This does not mean that all local translations shape policy, however. External constraints and translators' access to cohesive policy institutions filter what kind of neoliberal hybrids become policy reality. By comparing the moderate neoliberalism that prevails in Spain with the more radical one that shapes policy thinking in Romania, Ruling Ideas explains why neoliberal hybrids take the forms that they do and how they survive crises. Cornel Ban contributes to the literature by showing that these different varieties of neoliberalism depend on what competing ideas are available locally, on the networks of actors who serve as the local advocates of neoliberalism, and on their vulnerability to external coercion. The so-called ‘Spanish miracle’, beginning in the mid-1990s, eventually became a nightmare for the majority of the population, culminating in the present-day economic and political crisis. This book explores the main features of the Spanish political-economic model during both the growth and crisis periods. Analyzing the causes and consequences of the continuing economic crisis in Spain, this book delves into five analytical axes: the evolution of the growth model; the role of Spain in the international division of labor; the financial sector and its influence on the rest of the economy; changes in the labor market; and the distributional consequences of both the expansive phase and the later crisis. Furthermore, contributors examine the formation of a triangle of actors (the government sector, building sector, and financial capital) that shaped the Spanish growth model, together with the effects of Spain’s membership in the Economic and Monetary Union. Sin embargo, no está claro que semejante defensa de la libre responsabilidad sea la actitud realmente más extendida en nuestra sociedad, en la que lo que parece generalizado en creciente medida es la sistemática búsqueda de argumentos exculpatorios que minimicen la aceptación de responsabilidad por parte de los individuos (el ambiente familiar, el contexto económico, la inestabilidad emocional...). Desde el punto de vista teórico, estaríamos ante una paradoja. De tanto exculpar al individuo a base de responsabilizar a las estructuras, hemos terminado por convertirle en el eslabón más débil de la cadena. La misma modernidad que en un principio pretendía hacer descansar el sentido del mundo sobre el ser humano, convirtiéndolo en la nueva clave para justificar lo real, al final ha terminado por considerarlo un elemento incapaz de sostener nada ni hacerse cargo de acción alguna a poco que ésta tenga consecuencias negativas.
