Le monde moderne se veut de plus scientifique, mais cette science n'est plus rattachée, comme dans les sociétés traditionnelles, à des principes métaphysiques. C'est une science profane et non un prolongement de la connaissance absolue. En outre, le monde moderne n'est plus religieux. Même le christianisme est atteint par le matérialisme. Enfin le monde moderne est démocratique et René Guénon ne s'intéresse aux phénomènes politiques qu'en tant que signes de la mentalité générale. Le pouvoir, dit-il, ne peut venir que d'en haut. À travers cette critique radicale du monde occidental, la pensée de René Guénon se trouve ainsi exactement à l'opposé de tous les dogmes et de tous les concepts modernes.

Christian Giudice's Occult Imperium explores Italian national forms of Occultism, chiefly analyzing Arturo Reghini (1878-1946), his copious writings, and Roman Traditionalism. Trained as a mathematician at the prestigious University of Pisa, Reghini was one of the three giants of occult and esoteric thought in Italy, alongside his colleagues Julius Evola (1898-1974) and Giulian Kremmerz (1861-1930). Il peut y avoir une sorte d'équivalence entre des civilisations de formes très différentes, dès lors qu'elles reposent toutes sur les mêmes principes fondamentaux, dont elles représentent seulement des applications conditionnées par des circonstances variées. Tel est le cas de toutes les civilisations que nous pouvons appeler normales, ou encore traditionnelles ; il n'y a entre elles aucune opposition essentielle, et les divergences, s'il en existe, ne sont qu'extérieures et superficielles. What drives terrorists to glorify violence? In The Revolutionary Mystique and Terrorism in Contemporary Italy, Richard Drake seeks to explain the origins of Italian terrorism and the role that intellectuals played in valorizing the use of violence for political or social ends. Drake argues that a combination of socioeconomic factors and the influence of intellectual elites led to a sanctioning of violence by revolutionary political groups in Italy between 1969 and 1988. Drake explores what motivated Italian terrorists on both the Left and the Right during some of the most violent decades in modern Italian history and how these terrorists perceived the modern world as something to be destroyed rather than reformed. In 1989, The Revolutionary Mystique and Terrorism in Contemporary Italy received the Howard R. Marraro Prize from the Society for Italian Historical Studies. It was awarded for the best book that year on Italian history. The book is reissued now with a new introduction for the light it might shed on current terrorist challenges. The Italians had success in combating terrorism. We might learn something from their example. The section of the book dealing with the Italian "superfascist" philosopher, Julius Evola, holds special interest today.
