Rate constants for the Pt(IV) + Sn(II) and the Pt(IV) + Cu(I) redox reactions have been measured under various conditions using spectrophotometric and amperometric methods respectively. Rate equations are given which describe the data for the two reactions. The rate of reduction of Pt(IV) by Sn(II) is much faster than the rate of formation of the 1:1 complex between Pt(II) and Sn(II). The rate of reduction by Sn(II) varies linearly with increasing chloride concentration in nitrate and sulphate solutions. A possible explanation is offered for the higher rates in perchlorate solutions. The data for the Pt(IV) + Cu(I) system indicate that the reaction proceeds via an intermediate containing Pt(III), but there is no evidence for the formation of Pt(III) in the reduction of Pt(IV) by Sn(II). The mechanisms for both reactions are discussed in terms of complementary and non-complementary processes.

Electrochemical synthesis of inorganic compounds is a relatively unknown field. The successful, large industrial processes, such as chlorine-caustic production, are well known, but the large number of other compounds that have been synthesized electrochemically are much less appreciated, even by electrochemists and inorganic chemists. The last comprehensive book on this subject was published in the 1930's and no modern review or summary of the whole field is in existence. But the field is in no way dormant, as attested by the large number of publications, undiminished throughout the years, describing new syntheses and improvements of old ones. Indeed, it can be expected that practical applications of electrochemical inor ganic syntheses will increase in the future as an increasing portion of our energy will be available in electrical form. Electrochemical processes have important advantages over chemical routes: often the selectivity of the reaction can be better controlled through the use of potential control at the electrode, and the creation of environmen tally harmful waste material can be avoided more easily since one is using the purest reagent - the electron. In common with the editor of the first edition, my own personal involvement with tin chemistry began when I had the privilege of studying for a PhD degree under the supervision of Professor Alwyn G. Davies FRS at University College London (UCL) almost exactly 30 years ago. Then, following 21 years' service with the International Tin Research Institute, it was a great pleasure for me when the wheel turned full circle and, in 1994, Alwyn - now an Emeritus Professor - asked me to return to UCL as an Honorary Research Fellow in the Chemistry Department. One of my first tasks was when I received an invitation from Blackie A&P to edit the second edition of the Chemistry of Tin, which I was delighted to accept, since it enabled me to continued my life-long interest in tin chemistry and to maintain contact with my former friends and colleagues, many of whom have contributed to this book.
