Book Description
This chapbook is a true reflection of the feminist soul that I carry. All the poems in the collection are centered around body politics and its toxicity. My poems are a deep exposition of gender-based discrimination, sexual and reproductive rights violations that references my experience emanating from gender-based bias and proliferation of hate speech against women. These poems are not only the reflection of blatant violation of body rights but also address the human rights violation in today's toxic political environment as a whole. The first half of the collection with poems like" False Ownership'', "An Exercise in Futility" and'' My body Is Not An Apology", talks about body and female subjugation. For poems in the latter part "Resistance", "Even my grief should be productive", "When Men explain me things", and "How to be Woman" I have tried turning them on their heads to show not just how oppressive but also how ridiculous it is to rule and punish by gender division. The middle part of my collection including the poems" Peace - a metaphor for denial", "A Just Immigration Policy", "Unforgivable", "An Act of Self Defence" reflects how the body politics never remains an individual level but molds and morphs into a social monster birthing problem like human rights violation, immigration, gun violence, and racial discrimination. The tail end of my collection with poems like "Path to my freedom", "My Survival Story" and "My Body Like A Threat" talks about the strength and resilience which directs and guides me through the turbulent times and paves my path towards my survival. This chapbook highlights my journey, gives it a voice, and strengthens the fact that how the body is so central yet it remains invisible and still acts as a threat. This chapbook of mine is a clarion call towards eradicating gender-based discrimination and body shaming. It is not a request but an unapologetic and unfettered demand to see your body as a prayer, not an apology but a safe space where your soul can reside without any contempt or disdain. As a woman of color and surviving a patriarchal society these poems of mine build a discourse around feminine strength. It is a testimony of my survival story of living in a society full of misogyny. This is a book full of hope and empowerment.

Since he married Merrill Darling, daughter of billionaire financier Carter Darling, attorney Paul Ross has grown accustomed to all the luxuries of Park Avenue. But a tragic event is about to catapult the Darling family into the middle of a massive financial investigation and a red-hot scandal. Suddenly, Paul must decide where his loyalties really lie. Debut novelist Cristina Alger is a former analyst at Goldman Sachs, an attorney, and the daughter of a Wall Street financier. Book Description
New York Times bestselling author and “the reigning champ of nostalgia noir” (The New York Times Book Review) James Lee Burke returns with a powerful novel in the Holland Family series, an atmospheric coming-of-age story set in 1950s Texas, as the specter of the Korean War looms. On its surface, life in 1950s Houston is as you’d expect: stoic fathers, restless teens, drive-in movies, and souped-up Cadillacs. But underneath that surface lies a world shifting under high school junior Aaron Holland Broussard’s feet. The underlying class war between the haves and have nots is growing steadily, along with the menace of conflict overseas in Korea, providing a harrowing backdrop to his growth to manhood. But when Aaron spots the beautiful Valerie Epstein at a drive-in, he steps in when he sees her fighting with her boyfriend, Grady Harrelson. Aaron’s newfound confidence helps catch Valerie’s eye, and the two begin dating. Grady is a live wire though, and presents a looming problem for Aaron. You will recall the feelings and inspirational power of your first love, and empathize with Aaron’s extraordinary challenges to protect himself and the ones he loves in “this dark, atmospheric story” (Publishers Weekly). The Jealous Kind illustrates how first loves, friendship, violence, and power can alter what traditional America means for the people trying to find their way in a changing world.

Book Description
Winner of the 2019 Lilla A. Heston Award Co-winner of the 2018 Ethnography Division’s Best Book from the NCA In recent decades, poetry slams and the spoken word artists who compete in them have sparked a resurgent fascination with the world of poetry. However, there is little critical dialogue that fully engages with the cultural complexities present in slam and spoken word poetry communities, as well as their ramifications. In Killing Poetry, renowned slam poet, Javon Johnson unpacks some of the complicated issues that comprise performance poetry spaces. He argues that the truly radical potential in slam and spoken word communities lies not just in proving literary worth, speaking back to power, or even in altering power structures, but instead in imagining and working towards altogether different social relationships. His illuminating ethnography provides a critical history of the slam, contextualizes contemporary black poets in larger black literary traditions, and does away with the notion that poetry slams are inherently radically democratic and utopic. Killing Poetry—at times autobiographical, poetic, and journalistic—analyzes the masculine posturing in the Southern California community in particular, the sexual assault in the national community, and the ways in which related social media inadvertently replicate many of the same white supremacist, patriarchal, and mainstream logics so many spoken word poets seem to be working against. Throughout, Johnson examines the promises and problems within slam and spoken word, while illustrating how community is made and remade in hopes of eventually creating the radical spaces so many of these poets strive to achieve.

Book Description
These are 16 immersive, entertaining short stories about characters across caste, class, and religion in Bombay. Some of the stories have been nominated for prizes: Fundação Oriente Short Story Competition, 2015 (shortlist); Open Road Review 2016 (winner); DNA-Out of Print Contest 2017 (longlist), and DISQUIET International Literary prize, Lisbon 2019 (notable entry). * * * These stories are laced with the grit, sleaze and dynamism of Bombay. They explore the nerve centre of a great metropolis with caustic wit and uncompromising realism. From the red-light corner of Kamathipura and the race course of Mahalaxmi, from South Bombay where a perfume maker works on exotic fragrances to the throbbing epicentre of Thana and the township of Kalyan, from Bandra to Andheri, the city is brought alive through memorable characters, piquant situations and no holds barred language. With the occasional foray into Goa, the poet Rochelle Potkar makes an impressive debut in short fiction, a genre unfairly neglected by most publishers in India. --Manohar Shetty

Reviews - Potkar is a convincing raconteur and can tell a story well. - K. Srilata, The Hindu Her hypnotic prose weaves intense narratives... nicely offset by effective haiku. - Amanda Bell, Haibun Today A sense of musicality never deserts Potkar's words. - Siddharth Dasgupta, Joao-Roque Literary Journal Blurbs - “Rochelle has the haibuneer’s gift of vivid succinctness: ‘Manojji is a curious man. His eyes and ears are always shifting.’ The author could be describing herself, who and what she is—her senses alive, feeding on each other, wanting nothing more than to capture our world in the honey-trap of words, a world that is slipping away from us: autumn whirlwind . . . / a child grabs at her / candy floss.” - Gabriel Rosenstock “There is something very unique about Paper Asylum that continues to draw you in. . . . Some of the haiku in this collection would be standouts on their own, but when combined with her fine-toned prose they just sing the haibun form. . . . A wonderful read indeed!” - Michael Rehling “Rochelle Potkar is the ideal travel companion—adaptive, incisive, witty—and in Paper Asylum she invites us to pay closer attention to our surroundings, with delightful results.” - Christopher Merrill
