Book Description
Swami Bawra is the primary source and inspiration for this compilation of uniquely penetrating and accessible insights into Samkhya and Yoga. Kapil's Samkhya is the foundation of thought underlying the methods of Yoga. This commentary revives the core philosophy of Samkhya in the ancient search for truth and freedom from suffering. Nature and spirit are distinct, but emanate eternally from one Source. Nature projects into life as a continuum from causal and subtle energy to gross matter. Spirit or consciousness, integral to all existence, is that which enlivens nature. Realization of the eternal relationship between the individual and the Source of energy and consciousness ends suffering in one's present life.

Book Description
The sutras attributed to the sage Kapila comes in six books. The six books together are available under the title "Samkhya Pravachana Sutra". The first book summarises all the concerns of the other five books too. This is not a truthful translation, this is a reading. The scholarly ones who wants to learn Kapila Sutra with the seriousness it deserves they have to read the original texts. Importance of Samkhya is that this provides the theoretical foundation for Patanjali's yoga sutras. It distinguishes itself from Vedanta, Buddhism, Jainism, and Nyaya Darshans. Like Buddha, Kapila too addresses the issue of suffering. How to remove human suffering is the fundamental question the book addresses. As I read, I found this book is still relevant, a modern reader may not find it discardably ancient. The book is still relevant. I have not researched on the historical context of its writing.

Book Description
In Glimpses of Raja Yoga, Vimala Thakar introduces the basic concepts of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras by focusing on a different sutra, or aphorism, in each of the twelve chapters. In her opening chapter, she presents the historical and cultural background of Patanjali’s Raja Yoga. Chapter 2 contains an eloquent invocation of the dimension of Silence—the meditative state that one enters with the stilling of the mind. Chapters 3–6 examine the ethical principles and observances (the yamas and niyamas) that form the foundation of a healthy spiritual practice. Here Vimala discusses the importance of ahimsa (non-violence) and satya (truthfulness), and offers a radical interpretation of brahmacarya based on her understanding of Sanskrit. Chapter 7 concerns the kleshas or causes of suffering such as avidya (ignorance) and asmita (egotism). Chapter 8 discriminates between dharana (meditation with deliberate focus) and dhyana (effortless meditation), and reflects Vimala’s own experience. Chapter 9 describes the relation of prakriti (matter) and purusha (spirit) according to Patanjali. Chapters 10–12 describe the ultimate goal of the yogic journey—the absolute freedom of samadhi.

Book Description
This book offers translations of the 'Yoga Sūtra' of Patañjali in English, French and Dutch, as well as a commentary from the perspective of a practicing Buddhist. The 'Yoga Sūtra' of Patañjali is a remarkable short text of about 1200 words, codifying the best yoga practices in 195 Sanskrit aphorisms. Yoga became one of the six schools of Hindu philosophy. In contrast to Jainism and Buddhism, it always kept close to the 'Vedas'. These crucial scriptures speak of three paths to freedom from ignorance and the suffering it brings: Ritual, Mystical Devotion and Yoga. The 'Yoga Sūtra' of Patañjali turned Hindu Yoga systematic and close to direct yogic experience. Besides a critique of the eternal substances of seer (the self) and seen (Nature), the commentary also identifies correspondences between Jhāna Yoga and the various types of union (samādhi) mentioned by Patañjali and compares constraint (the application of concentration, contemplation and union) with the Nine Stages of Calm Abiding.

Book Description
Yoga is many things to many people. However, the basics of yoga are worth understanding given its popularity and the benefits of the practice. This includes understanding yoga's roots, its origins, its development within and outside India as well as the research involving yoga as an integrative therapeutic modality. The author introduces the topic of yoga to healthcare officials, practitioners, skeptics, and a range of curious people in between. For yoga practitioners and those interested in the practice, The Politics and Promise of Yoga: Contemporary Relevance of an Ancient Practice outlines a condensed view of traditional yoga practices and provides a glimpse into the origin of yoga within Indian history and philosophy. The author hopes that policymakers will be interested in this evidence-based scientific practice so that it can be systematically incorporated into mainstream biomedical systems around the globe. This book also serves to confirm existing knowledge and historical nuances about yoga and also addresses contemporary debates and politics which revolve around the practice.
