Joint resolutions of the Massachusetts legislature in response to passage of the act recognizing the pro-slavery Lecompton government as the government of the Kansas Territory, resolving that "we hold that the speedy admission of Kansas into the Union as a Free State, with her present Constitution, is a measure of the first importance to the welfare of that Territory, and to the tranquility and honor of the United States, and that our Senators and Representatives in Congress are earnestly requested to use every exertion to bring about this result." Passed in the House of Representatives on May 30, 1856, and in the Senate on May 31, approved by the governor June 3, and attested by signature of the secretary of the commonwealth, Francis De Witt, on June 4. Printed for distribution by Governor Henry J. Gardner, as requested per the final resolution, to the president of the United States, the governors of states and territories, and to the Massachusetts congressional delegation.
