Book Description
Spanning music, art and literature, the industrial and punk scenes of San Francisco in the late 1970s and early 1980s were diverse but united by a DIY, anti-authoritarian attitude. Photographer Ruby Ray was there to capture it all in the same spirit. With her work appearing in the legendary punk zine Search & Destroy and its successor RE/Search, Ray was at the epicenter of, and a key participant in, a vital cultural moment vibrant with provocation and creativity. A local experimental music and art scene supported artists like Bruce Conner, William S. Burroughs and Louise Nevelson and attracted groundbreaking bands like Devo, the Mutants, Boyd Rice and the Dead Kennedys, as well as established international bands like Throbbing Gristle, the Clash and the Sex Pistols (in fact, Ray was there to shoot their famous final concert at the Winterland Ballroom).

Book Description
Arrested for skateboarding at three o'clock in the morning at the Venice Beach Skate Park, Kalifornia Blu's life takes an unexpected turn when her rock star absent mom doesn't show up at her sentencing hearing. To avoid a trip to Juvenile Hall, she tracks down her dad-whom she hasn't seen since she was eight. The sentencing judge thinks a bit of discipline will be good for Kalifornia and transfers her to a Police Academy Magnet High School, where the students wear LAPD uniforms, learn police drills and practice forensics. And, she's forced to live with her ex-skateboarding, ex-guitar playing, ex-dad Zachary, in his run-down Venice loft with a 6 pm to 6 am curfew. It's not an easy sentence for a girl who has grown up touring with her mom, living in five-star hotels all over the world. Curfew is tough, but Kal is tenacious. When she discovers her cop school partner, Jade, is being threatened by her ganglord cousin, Kal skitches (skateboard hitches) a Range Rover through the Venice canals to save her. She rescues a young girl from a gnarly living situation with Jade's help. It's a rough world she's thrown into, with some dangerous people... and a few new friendships, discovered in the most unlikely places.

Book Description
Focusing on portrayals of California in popular culture, this collection of new essays traces a central theme of darkness through literature (Toby Barlow, Angela Carter, Joan Didion, Thomas Pynchon, and Claire Vaye Watkins), video games (L.A. Noire), music (Death Grips, Lana Del Rey, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers), TV (True Detective and American Horror Story), and film (Starry Eyes, Southland Tales and A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night). Providing insight into the significance of Californian icons, the contributors explore the interplay between positive stereotypes connected to the myth of the Golden State and ambivalent responses to the myth based on social and political power, the consequences of consumerism, transformations of the landscape and the dominance of hyperreality.

Book Description
In the Ancient Lands of Kemet, Goddess Sekhmet is a Legendary Lioness-Woman. In the chronicles, the famous lioness-woman NTR is tasked with raising the vibrational energies of humans... on a specific part of Earth called Olmecra. And unless there is an elevation in vibrations; Earth will not ascend with the other planets in its galaxy. The Matriarchy of the Kemetic Pantheon and Cosmic Goddesses, are the protagonist of the book; displaying their best nurturing attributes. The story is being told from a divine feminine perspective in a way Goddess Sekhmet is not traditionally typified. For those who study the Ancient Egyptians and/or Kemet; metaphors will develop into myth. And for those who are new to the subject matter; the interaction of the immortals with humans will encourage readers to seek what is seeking them. This novella is unique in that few stories are dedicated to the African Cosmic Pantheon as compared to books popularized by Greek and Roman mythology. Book Two is the second of a series of seven novellas that chronicle how the Goddess Sekhmet assists humans to help Earth ascend. In Book One, three exceptionally conscious women face individual crisis situations. And to the surprise of themselves and their community; they gain the gift to transform into a lioness-woman to balance out their circumstances. Another exceptional woman takes their signal to begin a new purpose quest to assist with Earth's ascension. The main antagonist, status quo of patriarchy; in the form of selfish systematic supremacy; attempts to progress its parasitic programming practices by spreading fear; and eating away at natural energy resources on the planet... and beyond. But the forces of nature get more involved in Earth's evolution. As an exceptional man embraces his animal spirit to provide and protect the path of the lioness-women. Book Two continues the chronicles in Book One with immortal conversations; and early background on how and why Olmecra was formed. The stories may seem controversial to some; but are non-confrontational. And the story-lines are never meant to make accusation of anyone or any group of people. But rather; what is emphasized is the misuse of spirituality; and the decline of the human condition. As the author evolves the chronicles; she hopes the concept of "Personal Agency" is encouraged, so the reader expands their thoughts, on their individual journey; and how their purpose fits in the Universe.

Book Description
The world Cal and Frida have always known is gone, and they've left the crumbling city of Los Angeles far behind them. They now live in a shack in the wilderness, working side-by-side to make their days tolerable in the face of hardship and isolation. Mourning a past they can't reclaim, they seek solace in each other. But the tentative existence they've built for themselves is thrown into doubt when Frida finds out she's pregnant. Terrified of the unknown and unsure of their ability to raise a child alone, Cal and Frida set out for the nearest settlement, a guarded and paranoid community with dark secrets. These people can offer them security, but Cal and Frida soon realize this community poses dangers of its own. In this unfamiliar world, where everything and everyone can be perceived as a threat, the couple must quickly decide whom to trust. A gripping and provocative debut novel by a stunning new talent, California imagines a frighteningly realistic near future, in which clashes between mankind's dark nature and deep-seated resilience force us to question how far we will go to protect the ones we love. "In her arresting debut novel, Edan Lepucki conjures a lush, intricate, deeply disturbing vision of the future, then masterfully exploits its dramatic possibilities."-Jennifer Egan, author of A Visit from the Goon Squad

Book Description
Philip L. Simpson provides an original and broad overview of the evolving serial killer genre in the two media most responsible for its popularity: literature and cinema of the 1980s and 1990s. The fictional serial killer, with a motiveless, highly individualized modus operandi, is the latest manifestation of the multiple murderers and homicidal maniacs that haunt American literature and, particularly, visual media such as cinema and television. Simpson theorizes that the serial killer genre results from a combination of earlier genre depictions of multiple murderers, inherited Gothic storytelling conventions, and threatening folkloric figures reworked over the years into a contemporary mythology of violence. Updated and repackaged for mass consumption, the Gothic villains, the monsters, the vampires, and the werewolves of the past have evolved into the fictional serial killer, who clearly reflects American cultural anxieties at the start of the twenty-first century. Citing numerous sources, Simpson argues that serial killers’ recent popularity as genre monsters owes much to their pliability to any number of authorial ideological agendas from both the left and the right ends of the political spectrum. Serial killers in fiction are a kind of debased and traumatized visionary, whose murders privately and publicly re-empower them with a pseudo-divine aura in the contemporary political moment. The current fascination with serial killer narratives can thus be explained as the latest manifestation of the ongoing human fascination with tales of gruesome murders and mythic villains finding a receptive audience in a nation galvanized by the increasingly apocalyptic tension between the extremist philosophies of both the New Right and the anti-New Right. Faced with a blizzard of works of varying quality dealing with the serial killer, Simpson has ruled out the catalog approach in this study in favor of in-depth an analysis of the best American work in the genre. He has chosen novels and films that have at least some degree of public name-recognition or notoriety, including Red Dragon and The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris, Manhunter directed by Michael Mann, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer directed by John McNaughton, Seven directed by David Fincher, Natural Born Killers directed by Oliver Stone, Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates, and American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis.
