Book Description
Excerpt from The Kaleidoscope, 1927, Vol. 33 In modern times, Florence Nightingale may, perhaps, be considered the pioneer in constructive movements for the organized relief of troops in the field, and out of these movements have grown the many agencies of the Red Cross and similar organizations for the amelioration of the condition of suffering humanity and for the systematic training of young women as nurses. It has been said that the luxuries of one generation become the comforts of the next and the necessities of the third. The time was when the sick were nursed only by members of the household and by kind friends and neighbors; but fifty years ago the place and the work of the trained nurse began to assume importance alongside with that of the physician and surgeon; and, as civilization became mo're complex, the nurse became a necessity and few would now dare to face a serious illness without the aid of this well - nigh indispensable angel of mercy. Book Description
Excerpt from The Kaleidoscope, 1918, Vol. 26 It is safe to surmise that among all the hosts of men who have attended Hamp den-sidney not one has loved it with a more powerful or more unselfish devotion. A few years ago he became deeply affected by the condition of the old burying ground of Union Seminary in the suburbs of the village. After the removal of the Seminary to Richmond it was impossible for the Seminary authorities to give the burying ground the same attention that it had received before the removal. Dr. Booker obtained permission to put. Improvements upon it. Laboring at it with his own hands, spending his own money upon it freely, he has converted it into a beautiful spot, worthy of the precious dust of dear ones, and the venerable dust of hampden-sidney's mighty citizens of a by gone time which are buried there. As one good deed is worthy of another, he next gave his attention to beautifying the college campus. It had already been greatly improved, and he completed the work, making it as beautiful a college campus as there is in the South. It is a fitting expression of his: rare attachment to Hampden - Sidne-y that he has now come back to The Hill with his family to make this his home for the remainder of his life. If he ever does get old' (which is doubtful), he will grow old here, but whether old or young in years, his youthful heart will always cherish a love for this place, its traditions, its development, its professors and students and alumni and everything else that bears any relation to the college of his youth and the chosen home of his later life. Excerpt from The Kaleidoscope, 1929, Vol. 35 Hampden - Sydney that, with fair consistency, resists change and maintains for years its distinctive characteristics, we wonder. But when we remember that outstanding personalities have influenced and moulded the institution's life and policy for long consecutive periods, we, in a measure, understand its conservative attitude and tendencies.
