Excerpt from Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 36: February 1, 1901 My brethren and Sisters, I have been ap pointed to say a few words this afternoon on the subject of sunday School Normal Classes. The importance of this subject is easily seen if we consider the quality of teaching that is at present done in many of our Sunday Schools. We all know that there is need for improvement, it is not necessary for me to go further into details concerning this. There has been much progress made in all lines of Sunday School work during the last few years. This is especially noticeable in the management and outward working Of the schools. Though it is not quite so noticeable, we find a corresponding advancement in the more technical lines such as class teaching and the methods used in that work. This advancement we may hope will continue through the help of the normal classes and otherwise, until this work shall have attained such excellence as the noble cause merits. So Rachel never allowed a night to pass without asking her Father in heaven to show to her in His own way, if it was His will for her to marry Frank; but no sooner would she finish her prayer than she would think, oh, I do hope it's His will for me to marry him; he is so nice and he loves me so dearly! Excerpt from Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 36: Designed for the Advancement of the Young; September 1, 1901 When only seventeen years old he was called upon a colonizing mission to Arizona. He left his home to fulfill this call on the first of February, 1876, driving two yoke of cattle on the way. After two months of hard travel he, with his companions, arrived near the present site of St. Joseph, on the Little Colorado River. He spent two years in as sisting to establish that town. While upon this mission he gained considerable valuable experience in constructing dams and canals, in getting out timber from the forests, in build ing log houses, as well as in plowing and planting, and all such work as is common to pioneer life. A little incident that occurred while he was in Arizona is worth relating, showing, as it does, that he at that time had learned to put his trust in the Lord for guidance. He emigrated with his mother to Utah in 1866. They settled in Davis County. The next year he was baptized by Elder Seth Dustin. He worked as a farm hand during boyhood, and later for some years in the mining camps of the Territory; at seventeen he became an apprentice at the blacksmith trade in Centerville, his present. Place of residence. In his early teens heat: tended the district schools of Davis County, and finally the Deseret University, where he graduated from the normal department in 1878. For some years he taught school and worked at his trade, and finally drifted into journalism, becoming associate and for a time editor-ih-chief of the Salt Lake Herald.
