Book Description
The American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise provides a biographical sketch of the American lawyer and politician Judah Philip Benjamin (1811-1884). He served as the Confederate Secretary of War from 1861-1862 and as the Confederate Secretary of State from 1862-1865. Benjamin was very unpopular for his recommendation that the South should emancipate any slave who volunteered to fight for the Confederacy during the Civil War (1861-1865). When U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was assassinated, Benjamin, together with Jefferson Davis (1808-1889), were suspected of plotting Lincoln's murder. Benjamin spent his final days in England. The information for the sketch was provided by the American Jewish Historical Society.
