Book Description
Excerpt from The Quest for Health and Happiness What was yesterday an abstract science in the college classroom is to-day a science of su preme interest to the general public. The quest for health and happiness has converted the sci ence of psychology into the most popular of the modern sciences. Great movements like the Em manuel Church Movement of Boston, the work under Bishop Fallows of Chicago, and similar movements in some of the larger churches in New York and Brooklyn, numerous mental heal ing and metaphysical clubs, as well as hundreds of smaller clubs and classes for the study of psychic phenomena, have come into existence within a few months. Many of these movements are within the Christian Church. Their leaders have assumed that the work of healing functional disorders, as well as moral and spiritual weaknesses, be longs to the Christian minister and as such ought to be made a part of the work of the Church. Book Description
Excerpt from The Psychology of Health and Happiness The law of life is progress, never retrogression. The so-called degeneration (the doom of the non-selected) is really a process of growth. That which seems to our human experience infinity is but a momentary incident in the vast related whole Of life. In the great law of selection of the fittest, it is conceivable that the degen crate is potentially more fit than his surviving neighbor, and in the ascent of life that he may outstrip him. Every force, every form of energy works through law. No advance is possible but through conformity to it. The principles of psychology underlie all human growth. The natural world in growth responds to its highest possibilities unswervingly, eternally. The human growth follows the same process. The highest achievement of man, indubitably, is thought power; and this energy is, of all forms, most powerful because it is the culmination. Conformation to this law means for man not only mould ing but making power; not adjustment merely, but crea tive possibility. Aberration from this law is unbalance (disease). Disease, from this standpoint, therefore, has broad scope. It is contemporaneous with life's begin nings. A rational interpretation of those forces which make for this unbalance should lead far toward adjust ment. Book Description
Excerpt from The Joy of Service Work itself is always a helper of happiness. Indolence is never truly happy. The happiest man is the busy man. Even physical health depends largely upon regular occupation. No man, able for duty, who is not busy, can be truly or deeply happy. The idle man may be living a life of pleasure, but it is not a life of real happiness. Work is a condition of joy. It is a blessing that most people, when sorrow comes, dare not pause to indulge their grief. Their duties are waiting for them, waiting so clamorously that they cannot linger even for the tender sentiment of sorrow. There is scarcely time to wait for the funeral to be over, after a bereavement, before imperative tasks must receive attention. It is well that it is so. The necessary activity keeps the heart from breaking, and preserves the life from the morbidity which so often sorrow pro duces when the hands lie folded. Work is therefore a secret of happiness. It saves the heart from being overcharged. The emotions which otherwise would lie pent up, to the hurt of the life, find vent and are wrought out in activities which bless others, while they produce health and wholesomeness in him who performs them. No worse mis take can be made by one in grief than to drop life's duties and tasks out of the hands, and cut one's self off from the common duties and ministries of life. God's comfort is not found in this way. Joy comes not back to him who nourishes his sorrow in idl'e brood ing; it is found only in the earnest and faith ful doing of every duty. Work has saved many a life from despair in time of great grief. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Happy Home Health Guide Of making books there is no end, exclaimed the Wise Man nearly a thousand years before our era, and yet the work of making books has been so diligently pursued that throughout the world print ing presses are running day and night, turning into print the written thoughts of a multitude of teeming brains. In the light of Solomon's declaration, that there is nothing new under the sun, it excites wonder as to what authors can find to say that has not been said over and over again. A new book, to merit favorable notice in our day, must serve some practical purpose, either to amuse, to instruct, or to console. Book Description
Excerpt from How to Obtain Happiness and Health When the time comes that the truth is lived up to in its fulness, then God will endow men with the same power and authority that the disciples had in ancient times, when the same great works, as we believe, will be wrought again on the earth. It is written in the New Testament, Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Prayer is very much misunderstood. We write to make these things plain, and we will make them plain and simple, so that any person who will commence to do God's will, can understand them.
